For centuries, the thick forest that originally covered this area served as a refuge for pirates and corsairs. Now, Vedado is the heart of the more modern part of Havana. The Vedado Hotel—with its two towers built in the sober, elegant English style that was popular during the building and tourist booms of the ’50s—was built here in 1952. The hotel’s first slogan was “The Vedado Hotel, in the best location”—which was very apt, as it is just a few steps from the Rampa, one of the most important streets in Havana and the address of several ministries, galleries, shops, a handicrafts market and various entertainment spots.
