"TREKKING TO THE GIANT CACTUS VALLEY" PREMIUM Tour

THE GIANT CACTUS VALLEY IN SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE. Step off the beaten path and discover one of the Atacama Desert's best-kept secrets on an unforgettable trekking adventure through the spectacular Giant Cactus Valley. Hidden among rugged canyons and ancient volcanic formations, this remarkable landscape offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most fascinating ecosystems of northern Chile while surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery.

Our journey begins with a scenic drive from San Pedro de Atacama toward the foothills of the Andes, where the desert gradually reveals a completely different face. Towering rock walls, colorful geological formations, and deep valleys create an extraordinary setting that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. The highlight of the experience is a guided hike through a secluded valley populated by hundreds of impressive Cardón cacti (Echinopsis atacamensis), some of which have been growing for more than two centuries and reach heights of over 8 meters (26 feet). Standing silently against the dramatic mountain backdrop, these giant cacti have become one of the most iconic symbols of the high-altitude Atacama landscape.

As we follow ancient trails once used by indigenous communities and shepherds, our guide will introduce you to the fascinating ecology of the desert, explaining how plants and wildlife have adapted to survive in one of the driest environments on Earth. Along the way, you may encounter native bird species, small mammals, lizards, and an extraordinary variety of desert flora that flourishes despite the harsh climatic conditions. Throughout the trek, spectacular panoramic viewpoints offer endless opportunities for photography. The combination of giant cacti, colorful mountains, volcanic formations, and the crystal-clear skies of the Atacama Desert creates unforgettable landscapes that change constantly with the shifting light.

Far from the crowds, this experience allows visitors to enjoy the silence, immensity, and peaceful atmosphere that make the Atacama Desert one of the world's most extraordinary natural destinations. It is an ideal excursion for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking authentic outdoor adventures beyond the traditional attractions of San Pedro de Atacama. To complete the experience, we'll enjoy a well-deserved picnic surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Andes before returning to San Pedro de Atacama with unforgettable memories of one of the region's most hidden natural treasures.

The Giant Cactus Valley is more than just a hike—it's an immersive journey into the timeless beauty, remarkable biodiversity, and extraordinary landscapes of the Chilean Altiplano.

Important Note:

Our agency strongly recommends that passengers follow an appropriate sightseeing schedule based on altitude levels. This gradual acclimatization helps the body adapt more comfortably to the region’s elevation and significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related discomfort during the trip. We recommend the following:

  • High-altitude excursions should be scheduled from the second day of your stay onward. Our suggested order is: Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons first, followed by El Tatio Geysers, and finally the Salt Flats Route, which reaches the highest elevations.
  • For passengers continuing their journey to Uyuni, we strongly recommend completing at least two high-altitude excursions in San Pedro de Atacama before traveling to Bolivia in order to facilitate proper acclimatization.
  • For volcano ascents, we recommend a minimum of three full days of acclimatization in San Pedro de Atacama. Guests should ideally complete the region’s higher-altitude excursions before attempting trekking activities such as Cerro Toco or Láskar Volcano.

Following these recommendations will help ensure a safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable experience while exploring the Atacama Desert and the surrounding Altiplano region.
