"HALF DAY VALLEY OF THE MOON" Tour

VALLEY OF THE MOON – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE. Nestled within the heart of the Atacama Desert, the Valley of the Moon is one of northern Chile’s most extraordinary natural attractions and a must-see destination for visitors to San Pedro de Atacama. Renowned for its surreal beauty and dramatic geological formations, this remarkable landscape offers an experience unlike anywhere else on Earth. Over millions of years, powerful winds, rare rainfall, and intense climatic conditions have sculpted the terrain into a fascinating collection of jagged ridges, salt-covered plains, towering dunes, and weathered rock formations. The result is a spectacular environment whose appearance closely resembles the surface of another planet, giving the valley its famous name. Every turn reveals a new panorama of rugged cliffs, natural sculptures, and vast open spaces that highlight the immense scale and beauty of the Atacama Desert.

As visitors explore the valley, they encounter a variety of unique geological features shaped by erosion and tectonic activity. Layers of mineral-rich rock display a stunning palette of colors ranging from soft beige and golden tones to deep reds and browns, creating a constantly changing visual spectacle throughout the day. The silence, aridity, and dramatic scenery combine to create an atmosphere of profound tranquility and wonder. One of the most memorable moments of any visit is the sunset experience. As daylight begins to fade, the surrounding mountains and rock formations become illuminated by an ever-changing display of colors. Shades of orange, pink, red, and violet gradually spread across the landscape, transforming the valley into one of the most spectacular natural stages in the Atacama Desert. The panoramic views during this time are widely considered among the most beautiful in Chile.

The Valley of the Moon forms part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, an important protected area that preserves the unique ecosystems, geological heritage, and cultural significance of the region. Guided visits provide valuable insight into the geological processes that created these landscapes, as well as the history of the indigenous peoples who have inhabited the Atacama for centuries. Whether you are a photographer, nature enthusiast, geology lover, or simply a traveler seeking extraordinary scenery, the Valley of the Moon offers an unforgettable encounter with one of the most spectacular desert landscapes in the world. Its otherworldly beauty, remarkable geological formations, and magical sunsets make it one of the defining experiences of any journey to San Pedro de Atacama.

Important Note:

Our agency strongly recommends that passengers follow an appropriate sightseeing schedule based on altitude levels. This gradual acclimatization helps the body adapt more comfortably to the region’s elevation and significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related discomfort during the trip. We recommend the following:

  • High-altitude excursions should be scheduled from the second day of your stay onward. Our suggested order is: Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons first, followed by El Tatio Geysers, and finally the Salt Flats Route, which reaches the highest elevations.
  • For passengers continuing their journey to Uyuni, we strongly recommend completing at least two high-altitude excursions in San Pedro de Atacama before traveling to Bolivia in order to facilitate proper acclimatization.
  • For volcano ascents, we recommend a minimum of three full days of acclimatization in San Pedro de Atacama. Guests should ideally complete the region’s higher-altitude excursions before attempting trekking activities such as Cerro Toco or Láskar Volcano.

Following these recommendations will help ensure a safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable experience while exploring the Atacama Desert and the surrounding Altiplano region.
