"Private Chichen Itza Classic" Tour
Description
The history of cocoa is linked to the different peoples that have cultivated it and used it as an ingredient or even as a currency. It was the Mayans, in 400 B.C., who began growing the cocoa. The cocoa tree was doubly appreciated in pre-Hispanic cultures, on the one hand, the beans were used as currency; and on the other, they constituted the ingredient of a revitalizing and nutritious drink. There are numerous legends that link it as food of the gods and that associate its origin with a gift from them.
Legend has it that Quetzalcoatl: God who symbolizes life, light, wisdom, fertility, knowledge and considered patron of the winds and the day, gave the cocoa tree to men as a reward for the love and faithfulness of his wife , who preferred to sacrifice his life before revealing the place where the treasure of the city was hidden. When the princess died, her blood fertilized the earth to give life to the cocoa tree: cacahuaquahitl. Thus, the suffering of the princess translates into the bitter taste of cocoa.
