“TREKKING TO THE HANGING GLACIER EL MORADO” Tour

THE HANGING GLACIER EL MORADO IN CHILE. The Hanging Glacier El Morado is one of the most striking natural attractions in central Chile, located within the El Morado Natural Monument in the Cajón del Maipo region. Set deep in the Andes Mountains and surrounded by dramatic peaks and rugged valleys, this impressive glacier offers visitors a powerful glimpse into the raw beauty and geological grandeur of the Chilean highlands. Suspended high on the mountainside beneath the imposing Cerro El Morado, which rises to over 5,000 meters above sea level, the glacier appears to cascade down steep rock walls, creating a spectacular visual contrast against the dark stone and snow-covered terrain. Over time, melting ice feeds a pristine mountain lagoon at its base, whose turquoise and deep blue tones reflect the surrounding peaks and sky, adding to the site’s breathtaking scenery.

Reaching the Hanging Glacier El Morado typically involves a scenic trek through the Cajón del Arenas Valley, a landscape rich in natural and cultural heritage. Along the route, visitors pass through wide valleys shaped by ancient glacial activity, cross clear mountain streams, and encounter native flora and fauna such as guanacos, foxes, and Andean birds, including the majestic condor. The area is also notable for its silence and sense of isolation, offering a tranquil environment ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and hikers seeking a meaningful connection with the Andes. The glacier stands as a visible reminder of the region’s glacial history and the importance of preserving these fragile ecosystems.

The Hanging Glacier El Morado is more than a scenic destination; it is an emblem of Chile’s Andean wilderness. Its dramatic landscapes, pristine environment, and powerful natural presence make it one of the most memorable highlights for travelers exploring Cajón del Maipo and the high mountains of central Chile.

Itinerary

  • We set off early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, departing from Santiago toward El Morado Natural Monument, a destination renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery and striking Andean landscapes. This protected area lies within the Cajón del Maipo, approximately 93 kilometers from the capital, in the heart of the Andes Mountains.
  • Upon entering the park, we encounter the impressive Cerro El Morado, from which the reserve takes its name. This prominent peak is one of the tallest in the region, rising to an elevation of about 5,060 meters above sea level and dominating the surrounding terrain.
  • By mid-morning, around 10:30 AM, we continue east into the Cajón del Arenas valley, where we begin a scenic trek lasting approximately three and a half hours. The hike leads us through dramatic high-mountain landscapes until we reach a stunning lagoon fed by the ancient Hanging Glacier El Morado, whose ice has shaped the area over thousands of years.
  • Throughout the walk, we have the chance to explore the glacier’s natural environment and observe the unique ecosystems of the high Andes. With favorable conditions, it is possible to spot native wildlife such as condors soaring overhead, guanacos roaming the valleys, foxes, and resilient plant species adapted to extreme altitude.
  • To complete the experience, we enjoy a carefully prepared Spanish-style platter featuring a selection of cheeses and Serrano ham, perfectly paired with fine Chilean wine. In the evening, around 8:00 PM, we return to our hotel in Santiago, bringing the day to a close with lasting memories of extraordinary landscapes, refined flavors, and an unforgettable mountain adventure.
