The Bellamar Caves, also known as Gran Paleocaverna Bellamar, are located only 5 km from the city of Matanzas, they are a set of galleries of more than 23 km long, formed 300 thousand years ago under the sea, in what used to be part of the current Matanzas Bay, which makes them the oldest tourist center in Cuba. The Bellamar Caves, in its cavern system were discovered large pictographic murals, in more than 28 cavities studied, found numerous fossils, fossilized sea nexus, seashells, snails and other marine species. Because of these values and its state of conservation, it was declared a National Monument in 1998. The Bellamar Caves were discovered accidentally in 1861 when a local slave lost a crowbar and opened a hole in the surface of the land where he was working, thus discovering the entrance to the cave. Soon, the owner of the land, aware of the discovery, began to exploit the site for tourism. From then until today, this magical place is a must for tourists who come to the area and want to know one of the most beautiful wonders created by nature on the island.
In the Bellamar Caves, which has four subterranean galleries, you can appreciate formations of diverse nature: stalactites, stalagmites and other curious crystalline formations that tend to join together and create beautiful figures. Its most distinctive hallmark are the translucent crystalline formations, complicated puppets as a result of having flooded the cavity on several occasions and whose result are sedimentary formations covered by a crystalline layer. The cave system contains evidence that there was an aboriginal habitat in the region dating back 1600 years, of Mesolithic communities, disseminated to different cave groups, belonging to the group of gatherers-fishers-hunters. The Bellamar Caves.
Also very close to the Bellamar Caves, only 12 kilometers from Matanzas, is one of the most spectacular sites in the Cuban geography: Saturno Cave. The Saturno Cave is about 20 meters deep and is full of stalactites and stalagmites. It has an interior lake of about 18 meters deep with such crystalline waters that allow to observe its bottom, and that turn it into an authentic natural swimming pool, where you can enjoy a refreshing bath or the practice of the speleo diving. The presence of submerged stalagmites suggests that this cave was not always flooded by water. It also has two galleries where fish and shrimp swim blind because of the darkness of the enclosure.
