“BAYAMO COLONIAL” Tour
Our Group proposes panoramic tours of the most significant sites in Cuban history, culture and contemporary life. So this is a treat for those seeking some vacation adventures on their Cuba holiday tour.
The village of San Salvador de Bayamo was founded on November 5, 1513 by Diego Velázquez, being at that time the second village to be founded on the island by the Spanish colonizers. Bayamo is currently the capital of the province of Granma in the east of the island, known as “the Second Villa of Cuba” or “The city of cars”. Cuba's national anthem was written in that city by local poet Perucho Figueredo. Bayamo has always been a historical city by tradition. In 1868, in the Hacienda La Demajagua, the first war of independence of Cuba began on January 12, 1869, its inhabitants preferred to burn the city rather than surrender it to the Spanish colonial army, a transcendental fact in the history of Cuba. In the later stages of the struggle for national liberation, the people of Bayamo continued to integrate and stand out in the Liberation Army.
The Bayamese have always been characterized by their love for the city. The city still preserves horse-drawn carriages as a reminder of colonial traditions. It also has historical sites that constitute a strong tourist attraction. In the center of the city there is a museum with belongings and documents of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Father of the Homeland. Also on display are copies of El Cubano Libre, the first independent newspaper published by him, 10 days after La Demajagua.
