The Baconao Biosphere Reserve covers an area of 84,985 ha with a 7,380 ha strip of sea. The name Baconao comes from a local legend of an indigenous boy who lived in southern Cuba during the Pre-Columbian period. The legend is based on a magic tree called Bacona, which taught the Indian boy to play music using the shells of the lagoon.
Baconao National Park and Biosphere Reserve is home to 1800 species of plants of great botanical, medicinal, food, industrial and religious interest, as well as 939 species of insects, birds, reptiles, arachnids and some mammals.
