"VISIT TO CAGUANES NATIONAL PARK" Tour

Description

Caguanes National Park is located between Sancti Spíritus and Villa Clara, both on the island of Cuba. It is a mixture of aboriginal history, impressive cliffs, scenic beauty, and wild fauna and flora. Ideal for nature lovers. This work of art of nature has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This natural area is strongly protected due to its great importance for the Cuban people.

Specialty: speleology, archeology, landscapes, flora, fauna and avifauna.

The trail has an extension of 900 meters and is designed to be done in 2 hours, presents a medium difficulty and is done on foot in its entirety.

Access is by land transfer from the town of Mayajigua in the municipality of Yaguajay, passing through the rural area of the Máximo Gómez settlement, an area of typical landscapes of the Cuban countryside, then the route is inserted into the Mayajigua - Nela road passing through the Rural Community of NELA, from where the entrance to the park is approximately 9 kilometers away. Once in the Caguanes Park area, the specialist guide will explain to the visitors the route and the particularities of the trail, which consists of a guided visit to three caves within the Caguanes Key sector of the Caguanes National Park: Humboldt Cave, Los Chivos Cave and Ramos Cave, each with different characteristics.

In Humboldt Cave the visitor is explained the anthropic processes generated by the extraction of bat guano and is given a brief explanation of the different types of secondary speleological formations or speleothems both zenithal, parietal and paved, present in the area. The origin of several of them is explained. The visual contrast between the anthropized part of the cave and the preserved part is interpreted.

In the Cueva de los Chivos, the dissolution and collapse processes that explain the formation of sinkholes and skylights in the roof of the cave are explained to the visitor. A description of the existing vegetation in the dolines is given and its development is related to the dissolution-slump processes on the cave ceiling. An area of the cave is visited where a subspecies of wasp endemic to Cayo Caguanes has been reported and the nests made by the wasp in holes in the floor of the speleothem are visualized.

In the Cueva de Ramos the visitor is shown the aboriginal pictographic murals and is given an explanation about their discoverers and their relationship with the aboriginal human groups that inhabited the area.

In addition, the trail includes as attractions the interpretation and enjoyment of the values of the semi-deciduous forest vegetation, the mangrove swamp, the marsh, the espeluncas, the sea and the fauna represented there. At the end of the trail, the client can enjoy bathing time at the Caguanes beach.
