The geographical environment of this town is characterized by the existence of large forests, abundant vegetation and small but deep lakes. It presents some undulations in its landscape, which vary in their altitude as far as the level of the sea, sometimes above some meters, in others they reach 2 m under the level of the sea. Its ornitofauna amounts to 212 species, of which 86 are permanent residents of our country, 101 migratory and 25 bimodal residents. It is important to highlight that the endemism of 23 of them constitutes 95.8% of the endemic birds of our country. In this area you can also find 6 of the 7 Cuban endemic genera and 3 local endemics: the ferminia (Ferminia cerverai), the gallinuela de Santo Tomás (Cyanolimnas cerverai) and the subspecies of the cabrerito de ciénaga (Torreornis inexpectata inexpectata).they all have one aspect in common: the lack of knowledge about their biology, especially the case of the gallinuela de Santo Tomás which was not seen for more than 20 years.

The native mammals of the Ciénaga de Zapata are represented by the orders Rodentia, Chiroptera and Sirenia, and this is the only region of Cuba where the three living genera of capromids coexist: Capromys, Mesocapromys and Mysateles. For the Ciénaga de Zapata there are reported to be 8 species of bats. The manatee (Trichechus manatus) is another of the mammals that inhabit this wetland, reported at the mouth of the Hatiguanico river and it is also possible to see it in areas of brackish water.
