“CITY TOURS TO THE SUGAR MILLS VALLEY“ Tour
The Sugar Mills Valley, located near the city of Trinidad in central Cuba, is one of the country's most emblematic and historically rich landscapes. This valley, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the center of sugar production in the 19th century, and its development was driven by African slave labor, who worked in the numerous sugar cane plantations and ingenios (sugar mills) that dotted the area.
The landscape of Valle de los Ingenios is marked by the presence of old sugar mills, haciendas and towers that were once the engine of the Cuban economy. Among the most important mills are the Ingenio San Isidro, the Ingenio de Manaca-Iznaga and the Ingenio de Santa Rosa. One of the most iconic elements of the valley is the Manaca-Iznaga tower, a 45-meter-high structure that originally served as a bell tower and as a lookout point for the plantations and trade routes.
The history of the Sugar Mill Valley is intrinsically linked to the boom in sugar production, which made Cuba one of the largest producers in the world during the 19th century. This prosperity, however, was also marked by the exploitation of African slaves, whose lives were essential to the operation of the mills. Today, the Valle de los Ingenios is not only a testimony to the wealth and development of that era, but also a reminder of the darker aspects of Cuban history, such as slavery and the struggle for freedom.
