Jeep Safari "SCUBA DIVING IN TANQUES AZULES (BLUE TANKS CAVE), GIBARA"
The Cavern Tanques Azules is a site of impressive natural beauty located in the municipality of Gibara, on the northern coast of the province of Holguin. It is a doline or cenote 30 meters long by 15 meters wide and 7 meters deep with transparent waters and blue reflection that gives access to the largest flooded cavern discovered in Cuba. Tanques Azules is not an isolated geographical feature, it is part of an impressive underground karst system with more than 30 internal cavities.
The Tanques Azules (Blue Tanks) Cavern has four kilometres of open galleries, very popular for the practice of speleodiving, with an impressive abundance and diversity of speleothegmas, stalactites, stalagmites (the stalagmites are located on the floor and the stalactites on the ceiling) columns, mantles, of great beauty. The cave system reaches a maximum depth of 21 m. Its galleries are home to blind fish (endemic) and other species of brackish water yet to be studied. The ceiling is high, which allows diving through rooms with considerable dimensions. In spite of the darkness, it is valid to emphasize the transparency of its interior waters, which allows a visibility of more than 20 meters with the use of lights.
The Blue Tanks Cavern is located within the Caletones ecological reserve, one of the most important in the country, crossed by one of the most important migratory bird corridors in Cuba, with a record of 86 migratory species, nine endemics, 11 endemic subspecies and 34 varieties resident in the area.
