Founded by Spanish colonizer Diego Velasquez as the third settlement of the island, the colonial gem of Trinidad is nowadays one of the best preserved towns of the Caribbean and the second in Cuba to earn a UNESCO listing after Havana. After Hernan Cortes set sail from here to discover Mexico, the city became incredibly wealthy through the sugar trade and the exploitation of slave labor in the cane sugar mills of the Valle de los Ingenios. Much of the heritage remains visible today and can be explored in and around the colorful cobblestone streets of Trinidad.

Trinidad is the best preserved colonial town in Cuba and the Valle de los Ingenios is a living museum of the former sugar trade of the 18th and 19th century. This UNESCO site is located at the southwestern coast of Cuba, in the Sancti Spiritus province, in the center of the island. Originally founded in 1514 by Diego Velazquez, most buildings in Trinidad date from the time of the sugar trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. The UNESCO inscription happened in 1988. Trinidad, a city that conserves its colonial architecture as if it had stopped in time. Its historical center reminds us perfectly the time of the Spanish colony with its cobbled streets and its red roofs with clay tiles. The Santísima Trinidad was the third village founded by the Spanish Crown in Cuba, at the beginning of 1514 it is one of the best preserved colonial cities not only of Cuba but also of America it is an area where the sugar industry prospered, this sugar production that enriched the owners of these mills, made them arise both in Trinidad and in the Valley, mansions and palaces that today are a pride of Cuban culture, the date of its founding is celebrated each year with a Trinitarian Culture Week. The Plaza Mayor, neo-baroque style is surrounded by large colonial buildings. The romantic museum is located in the restored Brunet palace, in the museum of colonial architecture you can see antiques from the time when sugar was produced in the town. The Church of the Holy Trinity is a cathedral of the s. XIX with vaulted ceiling and a carved altar.
