Tour around Santiago de Cuba, the second most important city in Cuba. Full of history and music.
Cuba produces rum industrially from the honeys of sugar cane and has four producing houses and about 90 brands, a figure that varies with the appearance of new ones in the market.
Founded on June 24, 1996, in a building built in 1889 for the residence of Kindelán Mozo de la Torre, Colonel of Militias, in the city of Santiago de Cuba, the Museum of Rum of Santiago de Cuba is a cultural institution focused on preserving the history of Cuba's rum industry, especially that of Santiago de Cuba. Its origins in this eastern city date back to the end of the 18th century when Catalan immigrants brought the stills of the sugar mills where they primarily produced spirits to the port and the railroad, in order to facilitate transportation and trade. The rooms of the Museum of Rum in Santiago de Cuba show the history of Cuba's sugar industry and the emergence of aguardiente and rum as by-products of it. There is also an area of aging barrels and a variety of rum labels and containers, from old brands that have already disappeared to others that still exist, such as Matusalén, Ron Santiago, Caribbean Club, Caney and others.
The Museum of Rum in this city, now located in the Santiago de Cuba Rum Factory, owned by the Cuba Ron S.A. Corporation, has more attractions in its new headquarters, allowing visitors to learn about the history of the popular beverage and appreciate the production process. It has three halls, one of which shows its origins with the introduction of sugar cane in the island, the second one shows famous rum masters and the productions made in the past, while the third one is a replica of the Don Pancho aging ship in the eastern city. The latter offers details of the cooperage and its secrets and exhibits old manufacturing machines.
