"ASCENT TO CERRO TOCO" Tour

ASCENT TO CERRO TOCO – San Pedro de Atacama. The Ascent to Cerro Toco is one of the most accessible and rewarding high-altitude adventures in the Atacama Desert, offering travelers the unique opportunity to reach a summit of over 5,600 meters above sea level in a short and well-paced expedition. Departing from San Pedro de Atacama, the journey takes us through the dramatic landscapes of the Andean highlands, where vast plains, volcanic formations, and endless skies create a truly inspiring setting. Cerro Toco is considered an ideal first high-altitude summit for those seeking to experience mountaineering in the Andes, thanks to its non-technical route and gradual ascent. From the drop-off point, we begin our hike across volcanic terrain shaped by ancient eruptions, allowing ample time for acclimatization and steady progress. Along the way, we may encounter high-altitude wildlife, such as vicuñas and Andean birds, while learning about the region’s geology and the cultural importance of volcanoes in Andean cosmology.

As we approach the summit, the reward is a spectacular panoramic view encompassing the Licancabur and Juriques volcanoes, the Atacama Salt Flat, and, on clear days, vast stretches of the Bolivian Altiplano. Standing at the top of Cerro Toco provides a profound sense of achievement and connection with the immensity of the Andes. This experience combines adventure, physical challenge, and natural beauty, making it a perfect option for travelers looking to push their limits while enjoying one of the most striking high-altitude environments in the world. The Ascent to Cerro Toco is an unforgettable highlight for adventure enthusiasts visiting San Pedro de Atacama.

Itinerary

  • We will be picked up from the hotel at approximately 7:00 AM to begin our thrilling ascent of Cerro Toco, an impressive stratovolcano rising to 5,604 meters above sea level. This remarkable Andean peak owes its name to the Kunza language, spoken by the ancient Atacameño (Lickanantay) people, and is located in the Antofagasta Region. Formed by successive layers of solidified lava from ancient volcanic eruptions, Cerro Toco stands out for its geological significance and for being one of the most accessible high-altitude volcanoes near San Pedro de Atacama.
  • From a starting point at approximately 5,100 meters, we will begin a guided hike lasting around three hours, following a well-defined trail that allows for a steady and safe ascent. Throughout the trek, we will make planned stops to rest, enjoy a box lunch, and take in the striking surroundings, where colorful volcanic rocks and vast mountain landscapes dominate the scenery.
  • As we gain altitude, the views become increasingly breathtaking, offering sweeping panoramas of the Andean range and neighboring volcanoes, including Licancabur and Llullaillaco, which rise majestically against the high-altitude sky.
  • After a rewarding and physically invigorating morning, we will descend and return to San Pedro de Atacama, arriving at the hotel around 12:00–12:30 PM, bringing to a close an unforgettable high-altitude adventure in the heart of the Andes.
