"ALTIPLANIC LAGOONS AND RED STONES + LUNCH" Tour

ALTIPLANIC LAGOONS AND RED STONES – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA. Experience one of the most breathtaking high-altitude landscapes in northern Chile on this unforgettable journey through the Altiplanic Lagoons and the spectacular Red Stones (Piedras Rojas), located deep within the Andean plateau near San Pedro de Atacama. This excursion combines dramatic scenery, unique wildlife, and extraordinary geological formations in a pristine desert environment. The adventure takes travelers into the heart of the Altiplano, where shimmering lagoons such as Laguna Miscanti and Laguna Miñiques rest at the foot of towering volcanoes. Their deep blue waters contrast beautifully with the surrounding snow-capped peaks and vast open plains, creating postcard-perfect views. These lagoons are home to native wildlife, including flamingos, vicuñas, and Andean birds, offering exceptional opportunities for nature observation and photography.

The journey continues to Piedras Rojas, one of the most striking geological sites in the Atacama Desert. Here, iron-rich volcanic rocks create an intense reddish terrain that contrasts dramatically with nearby salt flats and turquoise lagoons. Walking through this surreal landscape feels like stepping onto another planet, showcasing the raw power of volcanic and mineral processes that have shaped the region over millions of years. Throughout the tour, expert guides provide insightful explanations about the geology, ecology, and cultural significance of the Altiplano, enriching the experience with local and scientific knowledge. Due to the altitude, the itinerary is designed to allow gradual acclimatization, ensuring comfort while exploring this remarkable environment.

Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking extraordinary landscapes, Altiplanic Lagoons and Red Stones is one of the most iconic and visually stunning excursions in San Pedro de Atacama—a true highlight of the Chilean Andes.

Itinerary

  • Departing from San Pedro de Atacama between 8:00 and 8:30 AM, we head south into the Andean highlands, a region defined by vast open landscapes, unique native vegetation, and an impressive diversity of wildlife, lagoons, and salt flats characteristic of the Altiplano.
  • Our first highlights are the stunning Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons, located within the Los Flamencos National Reserve at an elevation of nearly 4,000 meters above sea level. These high-altitude lagoons captivate visitors with their deep blue, crystal-clear waters, framed by volcanic peaks and expansive plains. The area serves as an important habitat for Chilean flamingos and other Andean bird species, offering exceptional opportunities for observation and photography.
  • The journey continues to the Piedras Rojas viewpoint, situated in the striking Salar de Talar near the Laguna Tuyajto. Here, we walk along the edge of a dramatic landscape formed by volcanic hills and towering volcanoes rising to approximately 4,000 meters. The distinctive iron- and copper-toned rocks create a vivid contrast against the surrounding salt flats and lagoons, making this one of the most visually impressive sites in the region.
  • In the afternoon, we take time to unwind and enjoy a delicious lunch—either freshly prepared or provided as a boxed meal with sandwiches and beverages—bringing a perfect close to a day immersed in the raw beauty of the Altiplano.
  • At the end of the excursion, we return comfortably to our hotel in San Pedro de Atacama, carrying unforgettable memories of one of the most remarkable natural landscapes in northern Chile.
