The Catarpe Tunnel is located 5 kilometers north of San Pedro de Atacama, located on a river terrace well defended by ravines. In it are the remains of an ancient administrative center of the Inca culture.

Valle de la Muerte, located 2 km from San Pedro de Atacama, its geological origin is an emerged lake, where the ancient horizontal layers of sediment and rock, dating back about 23 million years, were pushed and folded by the movements of the earth's crust that raised the Andes Mountains, leaving some layers in a vertical position. The Cordillera de la Sal has been shaped over time by rain and wind, thus emerging impressive forms and mineral brilliance, composed of hills of salt, gypsum and clay, spectacular natural sculptures and varied colorations for the minerals that make up this attractive.

Itinerary

• Departure from San Pedro de Atacama towards the Catarpe tunnel.

• Walk of 2.5 hours to the south through the highest part of the Cordillera de la Sal, reaching the heart of the Valley of Death, descending huge sand dunes where the walk ends.

• We will enjoy impressive 360 ​​° views and we will have guaranteed fun having an excellent opportunity to roll down the huge sand dunes.
