ALTIPLANO is an extensive high altitude plain or altiplano of South America located at an average altitude of 3800 meters above sea level, which covers part of northwestern Argentina, western Bolivia, part of northern Chile and part of southern Chile. Peru. It has historical importance because it was the place where various civilizations emerged, such as the Tiahuanaco culture, and the domestication of plants such as the potato and animals such as the llama and the alpaca was carried out. Due to its environmental and ecological characteristics, it is a unique natural region on the continent and due to its altitude it belongs to the so-called Puna region.
VOLCÁN LICANBUR is an iconic mountain, due to the way it dominates the horizon from San Pedro de Atacama. The Licancabur, the “mountain of the people” of the Atacameños or Cunzas, was venerated as “Tata Maico Licán”, this perfect stone cone was one of those sacred altars chosen by those cultures. Already in 1886, José Santelices received news from the native pastor Severo Titichoca that there were signs of the ancients at its summit. This motivated their immediate ascent, and from the summit they collected statuettes and other relics, also finding stone constructions, and firewood that they piled up and burned in a bonfire to alert the locals to the ground floor. The Incas considered mountains sacred places, especially their peaks, where they raised stone shelters and made offerings; in the great heights of the Andes, and in the 15th century they sacrificed guinea pigs and llamas, burned garments, left there vessels, chicha, corn, piles of firewood and tombs, "huacas" that sometimes housed mummies with their rich gold and silver.
SALAR DE ATACAMA is the largest saline deposit in Chile located in the Antofagasta Region and is located exactly between two Chilean communes.
LAGUNA BLANCA is a salt flat located on the international boundary between Chile and Peru, within the so-called Andean Altiplano. It occupies an area of 19.5 km², 1 of which two thirds of the salt flats are in the Peruvian Department of Tacna and one third in the Arica and Parinacota Region of Chile.2 With a southwest-northeast orientation and shape irregular, the salar rises to a height of 4 253 m above sea level.
LAGUNA VERDE is a hyper-salty mountain lake. This lake is apparently devoid of life due to the extreme salinity of its waters, which are characterized by having a beautiful cerulean green color. It occupies the bottom of a deep, almost circular valley (circus) surrounded by volcanoes always covered by snow, such as the Nevado Ojos del Salado, El Muerto and the Nevado Incahuasi, among others belonging to the Andes mountain range. The fauna of the area is very scarce due to the great aridity and extreme climate.
DESERT SALVADOR DALI or simply Dalí Desert is a desert in southwestern Bolivia, located south of the department of Potosí within the Eduardo Abaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve and south of the Chalviri salt flat. It is located at an average height of 4750 meters above sea level1 and has an approximate area of 110 km². It is so named because it is similar to some landscapes painted by the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, although he never knew of the existence of this site.
LAGUNA COLORADA is a breeding place for Andean flamingos, migratory birds that number in the thousands in its mineral-rich waters. Its maximum dimensions are 10.7 km long by 9.6 km wide, with a surface area of 54 km² and an average depth of 35 cm. It is considered a lagoon of the high Andean-saline type, it also contains islands of borax in the northeast and southeast sectors. It has a coastal perimeter of 35 kilometers.
Itinerary
Departure from San Pedro de Atacama towards Laguna Verde, on the international highway to Paso Jama. The route ascends through a valley formed by lava and ash from the Licancabur Volcano.
Visit to the area known as Soncor and Laguna Chaxa where you can see 3 species of pink flamingos.
En route we will stop to contemplate the Salar de Atacama and the Oasis of San Pedro de Atacama.
Then we will be able to observe the Majestic Licancabur Volcano.
Arrival at the Hito Cajón border control for Chile / Bolivia.
Then we will visit Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde.
We will cross the Dalí Desert to reach Laguna Colorada, known as "Altoandinas Saladas" lagoons.
After an Atacameño cocktail we will return to San Pedro.
