MORAY SALINERAS TOUR.
Itinerary
The day's experience begins with the collection of travelers from their respective hotels to visit the following tourist attractions:
The archaeological site of Moray is located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas only 5 kilometers from Maras and 38 kilometers northwest of the city of Cusco. Located at 3,500 meters above sea level, it presents a series of concentric circles, which increase in size as they gain altitude. Each of these comprises a terrace with a different microclimate, the circles closer to the center will have higher temperatures and as they expand outwards they will have lower ones. The arrangement of these platforms suggests that it was a kind of agricultural research center in Inca times. The platforms are divided into 3 sectors; the first four correspond to the first sector, they are the ones at the bottom, they are more humid and their temperatures are low due to the higher evaporation of water. The second sector includes the following four platforms that have temperatures that oscillate between 2°C or 3°C per year. The platforms from 9 to 12 p with temperatures that can vary according to the sun exposure. The changes in temperature are more marked according to the dry or rainy season. All these characteristics have led to determine that the Incas recreated several types of climates in the terraces of Moray and with this they managed to produce a great variety of vegetables among which are the grains like quinoa, kiwicha, pumpkin, squash and potato varieties.
The town of Maras is located to the west of Cusco at 3300 m.a.s.l. From there you can see the Urubamba mountain range and the snowy peaks of "La Verónica" (5682 m.a.s.l.) and "Chikón" (5530 m.a.s.l.). Their important occupation began when the nobles of Cusco of the Inkan were deprived of their palaces in the Qosqo and they had to leave to settle down in other small towns like Maras.
Salt mines or "minas de sal" are located to the northwest of the town of Maras and are constituted by about 3000 small wells with an average area of about 5 m², during the dry season are filled or watered every 3 days with salt water from a natural spring located at the top of the wells. With evaporation, the salt contained in the water gradually solidifies. Finally we will be returning to the city of Cusco at approximately 1.30 pm.
