The Lasana Valley and the town of Chiu Chiu represent the Northern culture in its splendor. Both towns still have physical evidence of pre-Hispanic cultures, such as their pukaras and even the oldest church in the country.
Pukará de Lasana, an Atacama stone fortress built between the 9th and 12th centuries, reflects the splendor of this culture. Located on a cliff against the river and with defensive walls towards the west, the Pukará formed the refuge of chiefs and of the administration, besides being a place of refuge for the population.
Chiu Chiu town is located in a real oasis, which in pre-Hispanic times was also part of the Inca Trail.
