VALPARAISO, is one of Chile’s most iconic and culturally rich destinations. A city, commune, and major seaport, it is the capital of both the Province and the Region of Valparaíso. Renowned for its strong identity, historical significance, and bohemian spirit, Valparaíso stands as the historical, administrative, academic, and cultural heart of the metropolitan area it forms together with Viña del Mar, Quilpué, Villa Alemana, and Concón. Strategically located along the Pacific Ocean, Valparaíso is home to one of the busiest ports in Chile and one of the most important in the South Pacific. For centuries, this port played a key role as a gateway for international trade, immigration, and cultural exchange. This rich past is reflected in the city’s distinctive architecture, developed mainly in the late 19th century, featuring colorful hillside houses, historic funiculars, narrow stairways, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the bay.

Valparaíso also holds major national importance, as it is the seat of the National Congress of Chile, the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Navy, and several key state institutions, including the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries, and the National Customs Service, among others linked to fisheries and aquaculture. In recognition of its outstanding historical and architectural value, Valparaíso’s historic quarter was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, becoming the third protected site in Chile after Rapa Nui National Park and the Churches of Chiloé. This distinction has firmly positioned the city as a top cultural and tourist destination. Today, Valparaíso enchants visitors with its vibrant cultural life, strong university presence, thriving arts scene, colorful street art, charming cafés, and diverse gastronomy. Exploring its hills, ascensores, and waterfront offers an immersive experience into the soul of Chile’s most emblematic port city—one that celebrates creativity, history, and an unmistakable maritime character.
