SOUTHERN FJORDS NAVIGATION AND‘LOS PINGÜINOS’ NATURAL MONUMENT – MAGDALENA ISLAND, STRAIT OF MAGELLAN, CHILE. Discover one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations in southern Chile with a visit to ‘Los Pingüinos’ Natural Monument, located on Magdalena Island in the legendary Strait of Magellan. This protected area is a true sanctuary for nature, where thousands of Magellanic penguins, along with a variety of seabirds and marine mammals, live and thrive in their natural habitat. The island, together with nearby Marta Islet, is part of one of Chile’s most important ecological reserves. Fishing is strictly prohibited in the surrounding waters, ensuring the preservation of its delicate marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Administered by the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF), the site is carefully maintained and monitored, and it is also home to the historic Magdalena Island Lighthouse, which adds a cultural and historical dimension to your visit.

A journey to Magdalena Island offers an immersive wildlife experience. Step ashore and witness the remarkable behavior of thousands of penguins as they waddle across the island, interact with each other, and dive into the pristine waters. In addition to penguins, visitors may also spot rock cormorants, southern gulls, skuas, and playful sea lions and fur seals. Between November and March, the island is alive with activity, making this the perfect time to experience its vibrant natural life. Scientific monitoring programs ensure that tourism is sustainable while allowing visitors to enjoy the incredible biodiversity of the island responsibly. A trip to ‘Los Pingüinos’ Natural Monument is more than a sightseeing excursion—it’s an encounter with the raw beauty of Patagonia, a chance to connect with wildlife up close, and an unforgettable adventure through one of Chile’s most pristine and inspiring landscapes.

This excursion is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, families, and travelers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime experience in a truly unique natural setting.
