Following the impressive Route 27-CH, we will gradually ascend through a unique volcanic environment surrounded by some of the most iconic peaks of northern Chile.
  • Before beginning the ascent, we will make short stops at scenic viewpoints overlooking the majestic Licancabur and Juriques volcanoes, offering incredible opportunities to appreciate the vastness of the desert landscape and capture unforgettable photographs.
  • Continuing our journey, we will arrive at the base of Cerro Toco, where the trek begins at approximately 5,250 meters (17,225 feet) above sea level. After taking some time to prepare and adapt to the altitude, we will start our gradual ascent toward the summit.
  • The climb is carried out at a steady pace, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience while adapting to the high-altitude conditions. Depending on the rhythm of the group and the weather conditions, the ascent generally takes between two and three hours. Reaching the summit brings an incredible sense of achievement, rewarded by spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Andes, volcanoes, and the endless landscapes of the Atacama Desert.
  • After celebrating this unforgettable moment at the top, we will begin our descent, which takes approximately one additional hour. The return journey allows us to appreciate the landscape from a different perspective before heading back toward San Pedro de Atacama, arriving around 2:00 p.m.
  • Although the elevation gain is approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet), the altitude makes this trek a unique and rewarding challenge. Important Note:

Our agency strongly recommends that passengers follow an appropriate sightseeing schedule based on altitude levels. This gradual acclimatization helps the body adapt more comfortably to the region’s elevation and significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related discomfort during the trip. We recommend the following:

  • High-altitude excursions should be scheduled from the second day of your stay onward. Our suggested order is: Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons first, followed by El Tatio Geysers, and finally the Salt Flats Route, which reaches the highest elevations.
  • For passengers continuing their journey to Uyuni, we strongly recommend completing at least two high-altitude excursions in San Pedro de Atacama before traveling to Bolivia in order to facilitate proper acclimatization.
  • For volcano ascents, we recommend a minimum of three full days of acclimatization in San Pedro de Atacama. Guests should ideally complete the region’s higher-altitude excursions before attempting trekking activities such as Cerro Toco or Láskar Volcano.

Following these recommendations will help ensure a safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable experience while exploring the Atacama Desert and the surrounding Altiplano region.

Notes:

  • Level of difficulty: HIGH. It is not a technically difficult climb. The difficulty lies not in the terrain but in the altitude, since the ascent begins at an elevation of over 5,200 meters. Start of the trek: approximately 5,200–5,250 m, Elevation gain: 350–400 meters, Ascent time: 2–3 hours, Descent time: 1–1.5 hours.
  • Maximum elevation during the excursion: 5,604 m.a.s.l. (meters above sea level).
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Basic fitness level is sufficient. No trekking experience required. Suitable for most active travelers.
  • Recommended minimum age: There is no official regulation that prohibits or restricts minors from participating in this excursion. However, our agency does not recommend the participation of infants or young children due to the long travel distances, the nature of the terrain, the desert's weather conditions, and the limited access to medical facilities, as the nearest hospital is located approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from San Pedro de Atacama.
  • Children's rates: No special child fare applies. Under Chilean law, all minors must travel using an approved child restraint system or safety seat, occupying an individual seat inside the vehicle. Therefore, all children are charged the full adult fare.
  • The activity takes place in a remote area with no shelter or restroom facilities available. Weather conditions may change rapidly, and stop durations may vary accordingly.
  • Excursion days and schedules may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and the groups forming.
  • The pickup and return times depend on the season and will be confirmed upon booking confirmation.
  • To ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure, we recommend arriving well prepared for the high-altitude conditions. Dress in warm, layered clothing, as temperatures on the volcano can be considerably lower than in San Pedro de Atacama, especially during the early morning hours. Comfortable trekking or hiking boots with good grip are essential for walking on volcanic terrain, while sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are highly recommended due to the strong Andean sun.
  • We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for outdoor trekking activities and windy weather, a hat or cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, a photographic camera, and binoculars.
  • We recommend bringing bottles of mineral water and energy snacks.
  • We recommend dressing appropriately according to the season, preferably in layered clothing suitable for Patagonia’s changing weather conditions. Please note that the itinerary may be modified on the day of the excursion if weather conditions are unfavorable.
  • The tour’s return time may also be affected by weather conditions; therefore, we strongly recommend not scheduling flights, transfers, or other activities for the same day.
