"TREKKING TO THE GIANT CACTUS VALLEY" PREMIUM Tour
MACHUCA – RÍO GRANDE IN SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE. Discover one of the most authentic trekking experiences in the Chilean Altiplano as you hike between the traditional Andean village of Machuca and the remote community of Río Grande. This extraordinary journey takes you through breathtaking high-altitude landscapes where ancient indigenous culture, volcanic scenery, wetlands, and spectacular desert panoramas combine to create an unforgettable adventure far from the conventional tourist routes.
Located at more than 4,000 meters (13,120 feet) above sea level, the picturesque village of Machuca is one of the best-preserved Atacameño settlements in northern Chile. Its historic adobe houses, charming stone church, and peaceful atmosphere provide a fascinating introduction to the cultural heritage of the Andean highlands before the trekking adventure begins.
Leaving Machuca behind, the trail follows ancient paths once used by local shepherds and indigenous communities, gradually descending through vast open landscapes surrounded by colorful mountains, volcanic formations, and high-altitude wetlands. Along the route, you'll discover a remarkable variety of native flora and wildlife, including llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, flamingos, Andean birds, and numerous species specially adapted to the extreme conditions of the Altiplano. Throughout the hike, your guide will share fascinating insights into the geology, ecology, and ancestral traditions of the region, explaining how local communities have successfully lived in harmony with one of the world's most challenging natural environments for centuries.
As the scenery changes, you'll arrive in Río Grande, a peaceful oasis nestled within a spectacular canyon where crystal-clear mountain waters have sustained life for generations. Surrounded by agricultural terraces, native vegetation, and dramatic rock formations, this traditional Andean village offers a unique opportunity to experience the quieter and more authentic side of the Atacama Desert. This trekking route combines moderate physical activity with exceptional natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, making it ideal for travelers seeking meaningful outdoor experiences beyond the classic attractions of San Pedro de Atacama. Every stage of the journey reveals new landscapes, hidden valleys, and breathtaking viewpoints that showcase the incredible diversity of northern Chile.
Machuca – Río Grande is much more than a trekking excursion—it's a journey through the living history of the Altiplano, where ancient traditions, spectacular scenery, and the timeless silence of the Andes come together to create one of the most rewarding adventures in the Atacama Desert.
