Tour Itinerary:
FLY FISHING IN RÍO LAGARTOS: THE THRILL OF TARPON FISHING
Fly fishing is a traditional angling technique that, with today’s advanced equipment and technology, allows anglers to enjoy exciting fishing adventures and take on impressive fish. In Río Lagartos, the star attraction is the tarpon, ranging from smaller, younger fish to true giants that provide an unforgettable challenge for sport fishing enthusiasts.
Fishing Season:
Fishing is possible throughout the year. However, if you are looking for the best opportunities to encounter larger specimens, we recommend visiting between April and July. During these months, the lagoons and mangrove channels offer excellent opportunities to target tarpon, while giant specimens can also be found in the sea.
Recommended Fishing Gear:
We recommend bringing your own fishing equipment, choosing a light or heavy setup depending on your preferred fishing technique and the size of the fish you intend to target.
Light Tackle:
- 8- or 9-foot fly rod.
- 5–7 wt fly reel.
- Floating fly line.
- 100 yards of backing.
- 50 lb leader.
Heavy Tackle:
- 12-foot rod.
- 9–10 wt fly reel.
- Sinking line.
- 200 yards of backing.
- 100 lb leader.
First Fishing Session | 6:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.:
We take advantage of the early morning hours, one of the periods when tarpon are actively feeding. We explore water inlets, mangrove creeks, and brackish-water channels in search of schools of tarpon that can number up to 300 fish.
Second Fishing Session | 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.:
The second session provides another opportunity for anglers who had strikes or hooked fish during the morning but were unable to land one. As the sun begins to set, we explore areas where tarpon gather, looking for the chance to catch a good-sized specimen.
Get ready to experience the excitement of sport fishing in one of the most fascinating natural environments along the Yucatán coast.
