"FULL DAY SALT FLATS ROUTE" Tour

SALT FLATS ROUTE – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE. Embark on an unforgettable journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Chilean Altiplano on the Salt Flats Route, one of the most complete and breathtaking excursions available from San Pedro de Atacama. This full-day adventure takes travelers across an extraordinary mosaic of salt flats, high-altitude lagoons, volcanic formations, colorful mountains, and unique ecosystems that showcase the remarkable natural diversity of northern Chile. The route traverses some of the most iconic landscapes of the Atacama Desert, where vast salt plains stretch toward the horizon and towering volcanoes dominate the skyline. Along the way, visitors encounter a stunning combination of geological wonders shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity, tectonic forces, and extreme climatic conditions. The result is a landscape of extraordinary beauty, characterized by vibrant colors, dramatic contrasts, and endless panoramic views.

One of the highlights of the excursion is the opportunity to visit pristine high-altitude lagoons surrounded by imposing Andean peaks. Their crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains and skies, creating unforgettable scenery that seems almost surreal. Depending on the season, visitors may also observe flamingos and other native bird species that inhabit these fragile wetland ecosystems, adding a unique wildlife component to the experience. The Salt Flats Route also offers a fascinating insight into the geological history of the region. Ancient volcanic activity has left behind lava fields, mineral-rich formations, and colorful sedimentary landscapes that reveal millions of years of natural evolution. The contrast between the white salt crusts, red and orange mountains, turquoise lagoons, and deep blue skies creates some of the most photogenic landscapes in South America.

Throughout the day, travelers experience the unique atmosphere of the high Andes, where silence, vast open spaces, and dramatic scenery create a profound connection with nature. The route passes through remote areas that remain largely untouched, allowing visitors to appreciate the immense scale and beauty of one of the most extraordinary desert environments on the planet. Beyond its scenic appeal, the excursion also highlights the ecological importance of the region. The salt flats and wetlands serve as vital habitats for numerous species adapted to life in extreme conditions, making the area an important destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and wildlife observers.

The Salt Flats Route is ideal for travelers seeking to discover the very best of the Atacama Desert in a single day. Combining spectacular scenery, unique geological formations, high-altitude ecosystems, and unforgettable photographic opportunities, this excursion offers an extraordinary journey through one of the most remarkable landscapes on Earth. Important Note:

Our agency strongly recommends that passengers follow an appropriate sightseeing schedule based on altitude levels. This gradual acclimatization helps the body adapt more comfortably to the region’s elevation and significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related discomfort during the trip. We recommend the following:

  • High-altitude excursions should be scheduled from the second day of your stay onward. Our suggested order is: Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons first, followed by El Tatio Geysers, and finally the Salt Flats Route, which reaches the highest elevations.
  • For passengers continuing their journey to Uyuni, we strongly recommend completing at least two high-altitude excursions in San Pedro de Atacama before traveling to Bolivia in order to facilitate proper acclimatization.
  • For volcano ascents, we recommend a minimum of three full days of acclimatization in San Pedro de Atacama. Guests should ideally complete the region’s higher-altitude excursions before attempting trekking activities such as Cerro Toco or Láskar Volcano.

Following these recommendations will help ensure a safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable experience while exploring the Atacama Desert and the surrounding Altiplano region.
