Renting a car in Havana
Renting a car in Havana means choosing between neighborhoods almost as much as between companies. Cubacar, Havanautos, Rex, Vía and Cuba on the road each cover a different slice of the city, and knowing which one reaches where you need to be is half the planning.
Old Havana, Vedado, Miramar and Boyeros are the busiest patches, with Cubacar, Havanautos, Rex and Vía all present, so you have a real choice of counters and cars there. Nuevo Vedado narrows to Vía alone, Siboney to Cubacar, and Centro Habana to Cubacar and Havanautos. Cuba on the road works Havana and Playa on its own, and it is worth knowing for something the others do not have: a Fiat Ducato camper, and a Piaggio MP3 scooter if four wheels feel like too many.
What you drive can shift the whole trip. Havanautos and Cubacar both run the Kia Picanto and Renault Sandero for something light and easy, while their Hyundai Tucson covers a jeep with either manual or automatic. Vía adds the Suzuki Jimny for proper off-road manual driving, and Peugeot's 508 and 2008 lines for a smarter sedan or crossover. Rex is where the choices open right up, from the Hyundai Santa Fe and Creta Grand jeeps to a Mercedes-Benz A 200 or GLA 180, and if the mood takes you, a Mercedes-Benz C 180 Cabriolet with nowhere to be but wherever the road runs. Every company here includes insurance, offers airport pickup and lets you drop off in a different spot, so the logistics rarely get in the way of the driving.
