CABO SAN ANTONIO Villa

Villa Cabo San Antonio, is located in Las Tumbas beach, Guanahacabibes Peninsula, in the Sandino municipality, Pinar del Río province. In 1987, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) conferred the honorific category of the Biosphere Reserve on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula. On December 14, 2001, the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers approved the creation of the Guanahacabibes National Park with a total area of ​​39,830 hectares, which constitutes the core of the Peninsula de Guanahacabibes Biosphere Reserve, which has a land area of 23 880 hectares and a marine area of ​​15,950 hectares. The terrestrial part has three core areas, which are defined as Cabo Corrientes, El Veral and Cabo de San Antonio, and a narrow strip of the coastline. The marine area covers the southern portion of the Reserve, extending from Jaimanitas, east of Cabo Corrientes, to Cabo San Antonio.

Among the abundant archaeological sites that exist in the National Park and in the buffer zone, the residuary of the colonial period located next to the Roncali Lighthouse, in the vicinity of Las Tumbas beach, are of particular interest; that of Cueva del Francés, for the aboriginal pictographs that the site presents; the Cave of the Muslims, for containing some Paleolithic artifacts; and those of Cueva Bolondrón and Caleta del Resguardo, for presenting some aboriginal evidence agro-pottery. It is known that after the arrival of the colonizers, there was little settlement so the area was the nest of pirates, corsairs and buccaneers, which have reached our days, legends of treasures buried in caves and mountains, as well as sinister murders. The very name of The Tombs, in one of its versions, indicates that it comes from the existence of tombs of victims of internal struggles for the possession of pirate treasures. Although it should be noted that another version indicates that the Tombs, are open spaces in the vegetation with the aim of gaining free space for planting, raising livestock and housing construction.
