San Juan de los Remedios, City of Legends and Traditions, the Eighth Village of Cuba, was founded in 1515 by the Spanish colonizer Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa. It is located in the northeastern end of the province of Villa Clara, in the tourist corridor Santa Clara-Cayos de Villa Clara. Remedios is a city with a wide heritage of history, culture and traditions, as well as a beautiful source of natural resources. Its Historic Center was declared a national monument in 1980 for its buildings of the XVII, XVIII, XIX and XX centuries, which make them jewels of the domestic architecture of the center of the country. The legends of Remedios are little known, but they constitute a valuable potential of the intangible heritage of the city. The city of Remedios has consolidated a broad cultural heritage with authentic manifestations of traditional popular culture.
Among its main festivities are the Fairs of San Juan that are celebrated on the day of the Patron Saint "San Juan Bautista" at the same time that it is expected, in this festivity, the staging of the capture of the Güije de la Bajada by the 7 Juanes referred to the legend remediana as well as the famous Parrandas Remedianas: Founded since 1820 and in which the inhabitants of the neighborhoods of Carmen and San Salvador face in a fraternal challenge on December 24. For such reason they have deserved the qualification of National Celebration and Prize of Community Culture 2001, with vital character, at the same time that they were declared Intangible Patrimony of the Humanity in 2018 by the UNESCO.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, it was built as the home of Don Antonio María de la Torre y Rojas and his family. This gentleman was known, in Remedios, as ¨the richest man of his time¨.
In the early twentieth century, after having been sold, it was partially demolished and rebuilt as a two-story house, using a great part of its original structure. On April 25th, 1926, Hotel Barcelona was inaugurated here with a spacious restaurant in the ground floor and several rooms on top. Having been opened within the period of 1923-1935, the ¨Barcelona Hotel-Restaurant¨ was closed in 1931, due to the economic crisis prevailing in the country.
From 1934 to the years 2000, the building was used with several purposes and went down to a severe state of deterioration. In 2009 its rehabilitation was started in order to recover its function as a hotel within the Cubanacán Group. Since its very reopening, on January the 4th 2013, it is part of the ¨E Hotel¨ brand. It has 24 rooms, 5 of them are junior suites with a view over the central square and the major church. They are all equipped with air conditioning, hot water and satellite tv. Other services offered are Food and Beverages for up to 36 customers and Wi-Fi. In 2017 it was officially classified as a 4-star hotel.
