THE PORTILLO MOUNTAIN AND SKI RESORT is one of Chile’s most iconic and historic winter destinations, renowned worldwide for its spectacular alpine scenery, excellent snow conditions, and exclusive atmosphere. Located in the heart of the Andes Mountains, approximately 160 kilometers north of Santiago, Portillo sits near the Chile–Argentina border and overlooks the stunning turquoise waters of Laguna del Inca, creating a breathtaking natural setting unlike any other ski resort in South America. Founded in the 1940s, Portillo is considered the oldest ski resort in Chile and one of the most prestigious in the region. Its long tradition in winter sports has attracted professional athletes, international ski teams, and winter enthusiasts from around the world. The resort is particularly famous for its steep slopes, deep snow, and challenging terrain, making it a favorite destination for advanced skiers, while also offering areas suitable for beginners and intermediate levels.
One of Portillo’s most distinctive features is its European-style, all-inclusive concept, centered around the iconic yellow Hotel Portillo. Guests enjoy a seamless experience that combines accommodation, meals, ski passes, and activities, allowing them to focus entirely on enjoying the mountains. The resort also offers ski schools, equipment rentals, and modern lift systems, including the unique Va et Vient surface lifts, designed to handle steep and snowy conditions. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, Portillo offers a wide range of winter activities, such as snowshoeing, sledding, and scenic walks around Laguna del Inca. During the summer months, the area transforms into a haven for hiking, photography, and nature appreciation, showcasing the dramatic landscapes of the high Andes.
The Portillo Mountain and Ski Resort is more than just a ski destination; it is a place where history, sport, and natural beauty come together in perfect harmony. With its legendary slopes, stunning alpine setting, and warm hospitality, Portillo offers an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and the magic of the Andes Mountains.
Itinerary
- Departing from our hotel in Santiago, we set out on an impressive journey toward the Province of Los Andes, located in Chile’s Fifth Region, where dramatic mountain scenery unfolds at every turn. The drive takes approximately two hours, covering around 150 kilometers as we travel deep into the Andes Mountains toward Portillo, one of the most iconic and prestigious ski resorts on the continent.
- Upon arrival, we will spend much of the day at the oldest ski center in South America, situated at an altitude of 2,680 meters above sea level. Portillo is internationally recognized for the quality of its slopes, its reliable snow conditions, and its long-standing tradition in winter sports. With some luck, we may even witness professional skiers in training, as the resort is frequently used by elite Olympic teams, including delegations from countries such as the United States and Germany.
- Beyond its world-class ski facilities, Portillo captivates visitors with the extraordinary beauty of its surroundings. Towering peaks frame the landscape, while the legendary Laguna del Inca adds a mystical touch to the experience. According to Andean legend, the lagoon was formed from a tragic love story, giving this striking body of water both natural and cultural significance.
- During our visit, there will be free time to take stunning photographs, explore the area, relax, and enjoy lunch while admiring breathtaking panoramic views of the Andes.
