"WALKING AROUND TRINIDAD" Tour
Travel in a time machine in the charming city of Trinidad, the third oldest town in Cuba, today a World Cultural Heritage Site due to the high degree of conservation of its architectural ensemble framed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
- The tour begins in Santa Ana Square, located at the eastern end of the Historic Center, about 500 meters from the Main Square, was urbanized towards the end of the 18th century and was the access point to the Valle de los Ingenios and an important commercial artery of the time.
Two buildings stand out there, the Ermita de Santa Ana, which was for many years the main parish church, whose initial construction dates from the first quarter of the eighteenth century, was rebuilt in 1812 and the Cárcel Real, a building that occupied the old Royal Prison was built in 1844 and is an important exponent of colonial military architecture. - Then move along the entire Santa Ana Real Street where you can admire the old architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in very well preserved houses and currently inhabited by the citizens of the city. These buildings give the street a peculiar atmosphere, as they are typical examples of vernacular architecture.
- Other buildings of relevant importance that the visitor can admire; for its religious function we will refer to two constructions, the Ermita de la Popa, that from its height in the north end, dominates the city, must have been constructed between 1710 and 1725, with a hospital annexed to the same one.
- Visit to the Plaza de las Tres Cruces, located in the northwest end of the Historic Center, in the neighborhood known as El Calvario. In the middle of its ample space there are three wooden crosses, installed there at least since 1826 and that were the point of arrival of the catholic processions during the Holy Week and Corpus Christi, reason why the square acquired relevance from the initial moments of the conquest and colonization. In this square different symbolic manifestations took place, linked in not few cases to religious celebrations that, had in this the last station, hence the name and the Three Crosses that preside over the public space.
- Transfer to the historic center for a walking tour through the main streets of the city, where you can admire the most important buildings, squares and small squares of the city including the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza Real del Jigüe.
