"One Day in Cienfuegos" Bike Tour
A whole day of Cienfuegos and its surroundings, more intense than we do with our ebikes is hardly possible. We explore with our
original e-bikes one of the slightly younger colonial cities of Cuba. Located on Cuba's third largest bay, Cienfuegos is home to the world's largest sugar export port and the only, never completed, nuclear power plant in Cuba. Nevertheless, the beauty of the city gave her the name "La Perla del Sur". That Cienfuegos was founded by French settlers can still be seen today. We cycle along Cuba's longest magnificent avenue, the Prado, and perhaps you will notice that we are moving in the probably cleanest city in the country, and that completely free of contamination. The historic center of Cienfuegos declared by UNESCO as a cultural heritage of humanity will certainly impress you.
Itinerary
- Our guide awaits us with his e-bike at 10:00 am in the Marina of Cienfuegos in front of the white, huge and impressive main
building. Do not worry, the Marina is not that big. You will surely recognize the guide by the e-bike and a Cubyke sign or
shirt. From there we go together to pick up the bikes (optionally, an individual meeting point can be arranged with us for
closed groups).
- We begin our tour along the gigantic bay of Cienfuegos, which was long time unsettled and there where Columbus landed for the
first time in 1494.
- We cross through the modern marina, where we see that Cuba is changing. Several large catamaran charter agencies have settled
there and there are several catamaran tours up to Cayo Largo.
- We drive to La Punta. From there we can admire the extent of the bay and also have our first refreshment.
- On the way along the Malecon we pass through the alleys of the outskirts of Cienfuego, where we also encounter the simpler
life of the Cuban people in this magnificent city.
- We come to a rather impressive cemetery, the "Cementerio La Reina", which we will certainly visit, because of its beauty, but
don’t worry, not forever, because we have to go on, criss-crossing the checkered Cienfuegos in the direction of the former
parade ground. Here we find the only triumphal arch ever built in Cuba, built in 1902 of Spanish people in honor of
independence.
- Around the Parque Martí are quite impressive magnificent buildings that reflect the times of the once very rich metropolis.
- So slowly it is time to have lunch. We will enjoy the Cuban cuisine in a nice paladar and also prevent dehydration.
- Now, concentrated culture is approaching us. The Museo Histórico Naval Nacional, where Cuban maritime history awaits us, as
well as the Parque de las Locomotoras, where the steel steeds from a time of sugar cane boom are admired.
- The day is running out and we glide silently through some typical residential areas of this French Caribbean town on the
way back to our starting point.
- Here we will find some time for a beer, a cocktail or a softdrink to process the impressions.
Maybe we'll meet again on one of our many e-bike city trips or on one of our "cross through Cuba tours", to justifiably claim that you have experienced the largest island of the Caribbean in a special, intense and authentic way.
