Mil Cumbres is a protected natural reserve located in the Pinar del Río province of western Cuba. Covering approximately 17,000 hectares, it is nestled within the Guaniguanico mountain range. The area is characterized by its diverse terrain, including plains, depressions, elevations, and mountains, with the Pan de Guajaibón peak reaching an altitude of 692 meters, making it the highest point in western Cuba. The reserve boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It is home to around 1,155 plant species, with 273 being endemic to Cuba. Notably, it hosts 52 local endemic plant species, such as the cork palm, which has existed for over 62 million years. Wildlife includes various bird species like the Tomeguín del Pinar, Tomeguín de la Tierra, Negrito, and the Cuban trogon (Tocororo), among others.
Visitors to Mil Cumbres can engage in activities like hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, exploring trails such as the "El Cuabal" and "Regreso al Jurásico." These paths offer insights into the region's unique botanical features and the opportunity to experience traditional campesino (peasant) life, with locals sharing their knowledge and customs.
