Description

Mil Cumbres is a protected natural reserve located in the Pinar del Río province of western Cuba. Covering approximately 17,000 hectares, it is nestled within the Guaniguanico mountain range. The area is characterized by its diverse terrain, including plains, depressions, elevations, and mountains, with the Pan de Guajaibón peak reaching an altitude of 692 meters, making it the highest point in western Cuba. ​The reserve boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It is home to around 1,155 plant species, with 273 being endemic to Cuba. Notably, it hosts 52 local endemic plant species, such as the cork palm, which has existed for over 62 million years. Wildlife includes various bird species like the Tomeguín del Pinar, Tomeguín de la Tierra, Negrito, and the Cuban trogon (Tocororo), among others. ​

Visitors to Mil Cumbres can engage in activities like hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, exploring trails such as the "El Cuabal" and "Regreso al Jurásico." These paths offer insights into the region's unique botanical features and the opportunity to experience traditional campesino (peasant) life, with locals sharing their knowledge and customs.

Itinerary

• Transfer to the world famous “VALLEY OF VIÑALES”. “CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF HUMANITY”
• Arrival at the hotel Los Jazmines where you will be welcomed by the specialized local guide. Brief information meeting at the viewpoint of the Valley.
• At the Casa del Veguero “tourist reception center of the travel agency Ecotur” you will enjoy a Cuban cocktail, the farmer will elaborate a tobacco, with leaves of his vega.
• Departure in 4x4 cars through the area of Laguna de Piedra to the “Área de Recursos Maderables Manejados Mil Cumbres”. Known as such because of the great amount of elevations in the place.
• Tasting of an infusion mixed with honey according to the tourist's preference.
• Departure through the trail “Back to the Jurassic”, which crosses the small community of San Juan de Sagua, meeting with local people. From the point of view of flora and fauna, the most impressive thing is to observe the Cork Palm (microcyca calocoma) on the slopes of the San Marcos River, during the journey you can also appreciate coffee plants, guavas, vegetation and fauna typical of the place, fruit crops, viands and vegetables.
• All this is done surrounded by mountainous landscape where “EL PAN DE GUAJAIBON” is distinguished. The highest elevation of western Cuba.
• Return to the Guajiro's house and picnic lunch in the place.
• Return to the veguero's house in Viñales.
