Overview

”ELQUI VALLEY, HOME OF GABRIELA MISTRAL” Tour

The ELQUI VALLEY, formerly also known as the Coquimbo Valley, is a remarkable natural watershed located in the Province of Elqui, within Chile’s Coquimbo Region. This picturesque valley stretches from the Pacific coast deep into the Andes Mountains, offering a striking contrast between coastal landscapes, fertile riverbanks, and dramatic high-altitude scenery. At the heart of the valley flows the Elqui River, the main watercourse of the basin. The river is formed by the confluence of two Andean rivers—the Claro River and the Turbio River—both originating high in the Andes Mountains. From its mountainous source, the Elqui River winds westward through the valley, nourishing vineyards, orchards, and small towns along its path, before eventually reaching the Pacific Ocean a few kilometers north of the coastal city of La Serena.

The Elqui Valley is internationally renowned for its clear skies, dry climate, and exceptional natural light, making it one of the world’s premier destinations for astronomical observation. Numerous observatories are located throughout the region, attracting scientists and visitors alike who come to admire the southern skies. This same climate also supports the cultivation of grapes used in the production of pisco, Chile’s national spirit, as well as high-quality wines. Beyond its natural beauty, the Elqui Valley holds deep cultural and historical significance. It is the birthplace and spiritual home of Gabriela Mistral, Chilean poet, educator, and Nobel Prize winner in Literature. Her legacy is deeply intertwined with the landscape, and visitors can explore museums, cultural centers, and towns that reflect her life and influence.

Today, the Elqui Valley is a destination that blends nature, culture, and tranquility. Its scenic routes, traditional villages, fertile landscapes, and majestic mountain backdrop create an atmosphere of serenity and inspiration. Whether admired for its geography, its cultural heritage, or its celestial wonders, the Elqui Valley stands as one of Chile’s most unique and captivating regions.

  • Leaving our accommodation, we travel into the Elqui Valley, enjoying sweeping panoramic views of the towns of Algarrobito and Altovalsol along the way. The journey introduces us to the peaceful rural landscapes and fertile valleys that characterize this iconic region.
  • Our first stop is the village of Gualliguaica, often referred to as “the first town of the 21st century.” This unique settlement was rebuilt after severe flooding in the mid-1990s, and during our visit we explore the local train station and a reconstructed replica of the church that once stood in the original village.
  • We then continue to a specialized shop dedicated to papaya-based products, where there is time to browse and purchase local souvenirs made from one of the valley’s most traditional fruits.
  • As we proceed, we visit several cultural landmarks, including the Bauer Tower, the Church of La Inmaculada Concepción, and the Gabriela Mistral Memorial Plaza. We also stop at the Pueblito de Artesanos, a charming artisan village where handmade regional crafts are available for purchase.
  • There is free time to enjoy lunch at one of the city’s most highly regarded restaurants before continuing on to Montegrande. Here, we visit the tomb of the beloved poet Gabriela Mistral, as well as the museum and the former schoolhouse where she lived and studied during her childhood.
