"UYUNI SALT FLATS EXPEDITION (3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS)" Tour
Start: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE - End: UYUNI SALT FLATS, BOLIVIA.
UYUNI SALT FLATS – BOLIVIA. Stretching across the remote highlands of southwestern Bolivia, the Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni) stand as one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on Earth. Covering more than 10,000 square kilometers (3,900 square miles), it is the largest salt flat in the world and one of South America’s most iconic destinations. This immense white desert of salt offers a landscape so vast and surreal that it often feels as though visitors have stepped onto another planet. Formed from the evaporation of ancient prehistoric lakes thousands of years ago, the Uyuni Salt Flats create an endless horizon where sky and earth seem to merge into a single, breathtaking panorama. During the dry season, the surface transforms into a dazzling white expanse patterned with striking hexagonal salt formations. In the rainy season, a thin layer of water covers the flats, creating the world-famous “mirror effect,” where the sky is perfectly reflected on the ground, producing one of the most spectacular natural phenomena on the planet.
Beyond its stunning scenery, the Salar de Uyuni is home to remarkable attractions that make every journey unique. Travelers can visit Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop covered with giant cacti that rise dramatically from the sea of salt. The region also features colorful lagoons inhabited by flamingos, active volcanoes, geothermal fields, deserts sculpted by wind, and unique rock formations that showcase the incredible diversity of the Bolivian Altiplano. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Uyuni Salt Flats is their immense geological significance. Beneath the salt crust lies one of the world’s largest reserves of lithium, a resource increasingly important for modern technology and renewable energy. The salt flat also serves as a vital ecosystem for migratory birds, including several species of flamingos that gather in the surrounding lagoons throughout the year. A journey through the Uyuni region is much more than a sightseeing excursion—it is a true expedition through some of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in South America. Travelers encounter vast deserts, colorful mineral-rich lakes, steaming geothermal areas, snow-capped volcanoes, and star-filled skies that rank among the clearest on Earth.
Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to capture extraordinary images, from the famous perspective photographs on the salt flats to unforgettable sunrises, sunsets, and nighttime scenes beneath the Milky Way. The unique light, immense open spaces, and constantly changing colors create a dream setting for photographers and nature lovers alike. Whether visited as part of an adventure across the Bolivian Altiplano or as a standalone destination, the Uyuni Salt Flats offer an experience unlike any other. Combining natural beauty, geological wonders, cultural richness, and unforgettable landscapes, Salar de Uyuni remains one of the most awe-inspiring destinations on the planet—a place where the boundaries between earth and sky seem to disappear and every horizon invites exploration.

- Generally, the 3-day Salar de Uyuni tour departing from San Pedro de Atacama ends in the city of Uyuni, Bolivia. It's a good option for travelers who want to continue through Bolivia towards Potosí, Sucre, La Paz, or other destinations. If the passenger needs to return to San Pedro, it's usually advisable to book the 4-day program.
- The Salar de Uyuni is approximately 3,650 meters above sea level. However, during the tour departing from San Pedro de Atacama, even higher areas of the Bolivian Altiplano are traversed, with passes, lagoons, and sectors that can exceed 4,000 meters. Acclimatization before starting is essential.
- To cross from Chile to Bolivia, you must carry a passport or valid identity document according to your nationality and current immigration rules. Some travelers may need a visa or meet specific requirements. Before booking, it is essential to confirm the entry conditions for Bolivia and the required documentation.
- The Salar de Uyuni tour departing from San Pedro de Atacama crosses the border between Chile and Bolivia, usually through the Hito Cajón area. This means that travelers go through immigration controls and must comply with entry and exit requirements for both countries. Border crossing times may vary depending on the day's operations.
- On the Bolivian side, the tour is usually conducted in 4x4 vehicles, suitable for high-altitude routes, dirt roads, salt flats, lagoons, and isolated areas of the Altiplano. It's not a conventional luxury tour: the distances are long, the roads can be uneven, and the conditions are more adventurous.
- The Salar de Uyuni tour is an extraordinary experience, but not always comfortable. There are long 4x4 journeys, uneven roads, altitude, cold, simple accommodations in some options, and areas with limited services. For travelers who prioritize comfort, it is advisable to choose a superior, private option or one with better-category accommodations.
- Accommodation depends on the chosen option. In budget-friendly shared programs, simple accommodations, shared rooms, or shared bathrooms may be available depending on the night and route. In superior or private programs, private rooms, private bathrooms, or higher-end hotels may be available. It is important to confirm the room, bathroom, and heating before booking.
- Most 3- and 4-day programs include meals during the route, although the type of food depends on the chosen option and the local operator. In remote areas of Bolivia, the food is usually simple and practical. We recommend informing us in advance of any dietary restrictions, allergies, or special needs.
- The tour can be done with children, but it's not always recommended for young children due to the altitude, cold, long distances, uneven roads, and limited infrastructure.
