"UYUNI SALT FLATS EXPEDITION (4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS)" Tour

Start: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE - End: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA, CHILE.

UYUNI SALT FLATS – BOLIVIA. Hidden within the vast Andean highlands of southwestern Bolivia lies one of the most remarkable landscapes on Earth: the Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni). Spanning more than 10,000 square kilometers (3,900 square miles), this immense natural wonder is the largest salt flat on the planet and one of South America’s most unforgettable destinations. Its seemingly endless white horizon creates a dreamlike setting where nature reveals its most extraordinary artistry. The Salar de Uyuni was formed thousands of years ago from the evaporation of ancient inland lakes, leaving behind an immense expanse of crystalline salt. During the dry season, visitors are greeted by a dazzling white surface decorated with geometric salt patterns that stretch as far as the eye can see. When seasonal rains arrive, a thin layer of water transforms the landscape into a giant reflective canvas, creating the famous mirror effect that perfectly reflects the sky and produces one of the most breathtaking photographic scenes in the world.

The beauty of Uyuni extends far beyond the salt flats themselves. Travelers can explore Incahuasi Island, an ancient rocky formation rising dramatically from the white desert, where giant cacti stand as silent guardians over the landscape. The surrounding region reveals a spectacular variety of natural attractions, including colorful high-altitude lagoons inhabited by flamingos, steaming geothermal fields, vast deserts, volcanic peaks, and unique rock formations sculpted by centuries of wind and weather. The Uyuni region is also of exceptional geological importance. Beneath its immense salt crust lie some of the world's most significant lithium deposits, a resource that plays a key role in modern technology and the transition toward renewable energy. At the same time, the surrounding ecosystems provide an important habitat for wildlife, particularly the flamingo species that gather seasonally in the Altiplano’s mineral-rich lagoons. Exploring the Salar de Uyuni is not simply a visit to a single attraction—it is a journey through one of the most diverse and remote regions of South America. Along the way, visitors encounter vibrant landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, colorful lakes rich in minerals, dramatic desert scenery, and some of the clearest night skies found anywhere on Earth.

For photographers and nature enthusiasts, Uyuni offers endless opportunities for creativity and discovery. The vast open spaces, extraordinary light conditions, spectacular sunsets, and star-filled nights create a setting unlike any other. From iconic perspective photographs on the salt flats to stunning images of the Milky Way overhead, every moment becomes a visual masterpiece. Whether experienced as part of an extended expedition across the Bolivian Altiplano or as a destination in its own right, the Uyuni Salt Flats deliver an unforgettable combination of natural beauty, adventure, and wonder. It is a place where landscapes defy imagination, horizons seem infinite, and every journey leaves travelers with memories that last a lifetime.

Important Note:

  • The 4-day, 3-night program is usually designed for travelers who want to visit the Salar de Uyuni and return to San Pedro de Atacama at the end of the trip. It's the most practical option for those who have flights, accommodation, or subsequent tours in Chile.
  • The Salar de Uyuni is approximately 3,650 meters above sea level. However, during the tour departing from San Pedro de Atacama, even higher areas of the Bolivian Altiplano are traversed, with passes, lagoons, and sectors that can exceed 4,000 meters. Acclimatization before starting is essential.
  • To cross from Chile to Bolivia, you must carry a passport or valid identity document according to your nationality and current immigration rules. Some travelers may need a visa or meet specific requirements. Before booking, it is essential to confirm the entry conditions for Bolivia and the required documentation.
  • The Salar de Uyuni tour departing from San Pedro de Atacama crosses the border between Chile and Bolivia, usually through the Hito Cajón area. This means that travelers go through immigration controls and must comply with entry and exit requirements for both countries. Border crossing times may vary depending on the day's operations.
  • On the Bolivian side, the tour is usually conducted in 4x4 vehicles, suitable for high-altitude routes, dirt roads, salt flats, lagoons, and isolated areas of the Altiplano. It's not a conventional luxury tour: the distances are long, the roads can be uneven, and the conditions are more adventurous.
  • The Salar de Uyuni tour is an extraordinary experience, but not always comfortable. There are long 4x4 journeys, uneven roads, altitude, cold, simple accommodations in some options, and areas with limited services. For travelers who prioritize comfort, it is advisable to choose a superior, private option or one with better-category accommodations.
  • Accommodation depends on the chosen option. In budget-friendly shared programs, simple accommodations, shared rooms, or shared bathrooms may be available depending on the night and route. In superior or private programs, private rooms, private bathrooms, or higher-end hotels may be available. It is important to confirm the room, bathroom, and heating before booking.
  • Most 3- and 4-day programs include meals during the route, although the type of food depends on the chosen option and the local operator. In remote areas of Bolivia, the food is usually simple and practical. We recommend informing us in advance of any dietary restrictions, allergies, or special needs.
  • The tour can be done with children, but it's not always recommended for young children due to the altitude, cold, long distances, uneven roads, and limited infrastructure. For families, it's best to consider private or superior options, confirm comfortable accommodations, and take into account the age, health, and travel experience of the children.

Notes:

  • Level of difficulty: LOW TO MODERATE.
  • Maximum elevation during the excursion: 5,000 m.a.s.l. (meters above sea level).

  • Clients must inform us if they have any health conditions such as pregnancy, hypertension, or heart problems.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Basic fitness level is sufficient. No trekking experience required. Suitable for most active travelers.
  • Minimum age required for the tour: Recommended for children aged 7 and above, depending on the child’s physical condition. Due to the distance, terrain type, and weather conditions, this activity is not recommended for young children.
  • Children rate applies from 8 to 12 years old. Adult rate applies from 13 years old and above.
  • The activity takes place in a remote area with no shelter or restroom facilities available. Weather conditions may change rapidly, and stop durations may vary accordingly.
  • Excursion days and schedules may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and the groups forming.
  • The pickup and return times depend on the season and will be confirmed upon booking confirmation.
  • We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for outdoor trekking activities and windy weather, a hat or cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, a photographic camera, and binoculars.
  • We recommend bringing warm and comfortable clothing, preferably in layers: a thermal base layer, fleece, windbreaker, long pants, hat, gloves, thick socks, and comfortable shoes. It's also important to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, water, personal items, toilet paper, a flashlight, and a small backpack for the day.
  • We recommend bringing bottles of mineral water and energy snacks.
