"FULL DAY TREKKING MONTE TARN" Tour
MOUNT TARN – CHILE: Rising dramatically above the remote wilderness of southern Patagonia, Mount Tarn is one of the most fascinating and lesser-known trekking destinations in the Magallanes Region of Chile. Located south of Punta Arenas on the Brunswick Peninsula, this rugged mountain offers adventurous travelers an unforgettable experience surrounded by pristine forests, peat bogs, panoramic viewpoints, and the powerful landscapes of the Strait of Magellan. Standing at approximately 834 meters (2,736 feet) above sea level, Mount Tarn may not be among the tallest peaks in Patagonia, but its geographical location and commanding views make it one of the most rewarding summits in the region. The mountain is especially famous for being visited by the renowned naturalist Charles Darwin during his expedition aboard the HMS Beagle in the 19th century. From its summit, Darwin described some of the most extraordinary landscapes he encountered in southern South America.
The journey to Mount Tarn takes visitors through an authentic Patagonian environment largely untouched by mass tourism. The trail crosses dense native forests, wetlands, rocky terrain, and areas shaped by the region’s strong winds and extreme weather conditions. Along the route, hikers can observe unique flora typical of southern Patagonia, including lenga forests, mosses, lichens, and the remarkable Guaitecas cypress, considered the southernmost conifer species in the world. Wildlife observation is another highlight of the experience. The area is home to a variety of native birds, including the impressive Magellanic woodpecker, birds of prey, and other species adapted to the harsh southern climate. The silence and remoteness of the landscape create a true sense of exploration and connection with nature. Reaching the summit of Mount Tarn rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views of the Strait of Magellan, Dawson Island, San Isidro Lighthouse, Mount Sarmiento, and the rugged mountain ranges of the Brunswick Peninsula. On clear days, the scenery extends across vast Patagonian landscapes where mountains, ocean, forests, and sky merge into one spectacular natural panorama.
Unlike more crowded trekking destinations, Mount Tarn offers a more intimate and authentic Patagonian adventure. The constantly changing weather, strong winds, and isolated environment add a true sense of expedition to the experience, making it especially appealing for nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking something beyond traditional tourist routes. Accessible as a full-day excursion from Punta Arenas, Mount Tarn combines history, wilderness, and adventure in one extraordinary journey through the southernmost landscapes of Chilean Patagonia. It is a destination where visitors can experience the raw beauty, solitude, and untamed spirit that define the far south of the world.

In exceptional circumstances, adverse weather conditions may prevent the return to Punta Arenas on the originally scheduled date.
