Itinerary

This journey takes you deep into one of the most unique volcanic landscapes in southern Patagonia, where vast basaltic lava fields, ancient volcanic cones, and sparse semi-desert vegetation create a scenery that feels almost extraterrestrial. Within this remote environment lies one of the park’s most significant historical treasures: the Pali Aike Cave, a site where human remains dating back more than 10,000 years have been discovered, offering a rare glimpse into the earliest inhabitants of the region.

• Your experience begins with pick-up from your accommodation in Punta Arenas (urban area) starting at approximately 8:00 AM. As we leave the city behind, the route opens into the immense Patagonian steppe, a vast and silent landscape shaped by wind, where native flora and fauna thrive in one of the most extreme environments in South America.
• The first stop will be at the historic San Gregorio Estancia, a place that preserves the essence of Patagonia’s pioneering past. Here, we will also observe the remains of the steamship Amadeo and the historic clipper Ambassador, relics that reflect the maritime and industrial heritage of the region.
• We then continue toward Pali Aike National Park, entering a truly extraordinary volcanic territory. The scenery changes dramatically as black lava formations, extinct volcanic cones, and open steppe landscapes unfold in every direction, creating a powerful contrast of colors and textures.
• Inside the park, we will visit the renowned Pali Aike Cave, an archaeological site of great importance where evidence of human occupation dating back over 10,000 years has been found. This location provides a unique connection to Patagonia’s earliest history.
• During the approximately 8 km hike, we will explore some of the park’s most striking formations, including the Devil’s Wells, Devil’s Home, Laguna Ana, and the crater of an extinct volcano known locally as the Devil’s Home area. Along the way, you will also have the chance to observe native wildlife such as guanacos, foxes, rheas, and various bird species, all adapted to this rugged volcanic environment.
• After a full day of exploration, we will begin our return to Punta Arenas, arriving at approximately 19:00 hrs, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation.

Estimated Schedule:

• Pick-up: Between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM from accommodations located within the urban area of Punta Arenas.
• Estimated Return: Between 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM, subject to weather conditions, and the operational route assigned for the day.
• Approximate Duration: 11 to 11.30 hours.

Availability:

This excursion does not operate with daily departures, as tour availability depends on several factors, including seasonal weather conditions, actual availability at the Pali Aike National Park and minimum passenger requirements.

• December 25 and January 1: The excursion does not operate due to national holidays.

Reservation Deadline:

Advance booking is highly recommended. Reservations should ideally be confirmed in advance, with a minimum notice of 48 hours, as this excursion depends on availability at the Pali Aike National Park and daily operational conditions.

Important Recommendation for Passengers:

Our agency strongly recommends not booking this excursion if passengers have a departing flight or bus from Punta Arenas on the same day, or during the early morning hours of the following day. Return times may vary due to weather conditions, ferry schedules, operational availability, or route adjustments. In exceptional circumstances, adverse weather conditions may prevent the return to Punta Arenas on the originally scheduled date. Any additional expenses not included in the program — such as accommodation, meals, flight changes, transportation, or any other costs resulting from these force majeure situations — will be the sole and full responsibility of the passenger.

Notes:

• Level of difficulty: LOW – MODERATE DIFFICULTY
• TERRAIN CHARACTERISTICS: Well-marked trails in general. The terrain is irregular and volcanic, composed of basalt rock, gravel, and compact sand. Sections are exposed to strong Patagonian winds (an important factor). There are few technical slopes, but the surface is uneven throughout.
• PHYSICAL DEMAND: Typical hikes cover approximately 5 to 8 km, with 2 to 4 hours of effective walking. The pace is generally easy to moderate.
• FACTORS THAT INCREASE DIFFICULTY: Constant strong winds (very typical in the Magallanes region), lack of shade and shelter, highly changeable weather conditions (cold, rain, and occasional snow), and volcanic terrain that can be slippery or unstable in certain areas.
• Minimum age required for the tour: 3 years old.
• Children rate applies from 8 to 12 years old. Adult rate applies from 13 years old and above.
• Excursion days and schedules may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and the groups forming.
