“SALT FLATS ROUTE" Tour
Atacama Salt Flat: A Vast Landscape of Light and Silence.
Discover the breathtaking Atacama Salt Flat, one of the most extraordinary natural landscapes in northern Chile. Stretching across a vast desert basin surrounded by volcanoes and mountain ranges, this immense white expanse reveals the raw beauty of one of the driest places on Earth.
As you explore the salt flat, the landscape unfolds in remarkable contrasts: brilliant white salt formations, golden desert plains, distant volcanic peaks, and lagoons where flamingos move gracefully through the shallow waters. The intense sunlight and exceptionally clear skies create a constantly changing panorama of colors, textures, and reflections.
The salt flat was formed over thousands of years as mineral-rich waters evaporated, leaving behind layers of salt and other natural compounds. This unique environment supports a surprising variety of wildlife, including Andean flamingos, vicuñas, and other species specially adapted to the extreme desert conditions.
One of the highlights of the visit is the opportunity to observe flamingos in their natural habitat. Against the silent backdrop of the Altiplano, their delicate movements and vivid pink feathers create an unforgettable spectacle.
The Atacama Salt Flat is more than a scenic destination. It is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with the immense scale of nature. Surrounded by silence, open skies, and ancient geological formations, every visit becomes a powerful and memorable experience.
Itinerary:
Salt Flats Route: A Journey into the Heart of the Altiplano
-
Embark on an extraordinary full-day adventure across the remote and magnificent Altiplano of the Atacama Desert. This is far more than a tour between isolated attractions: it is an immersive journey through vast landscapes, ancient volcanoes, shimmering salt flats, high-altitude wetlands, and a silence that seems to stretch endlessly beneath the Andean sky.
-
Your experience begins in the morning in San Pedro de Atacama, as you leave the oasis behind and gradually ascend toward the Andes. With every kilometer, the scenery becomes wider, wilder, and more spectacular. Volcanoes rise above golden plains, meltwater rivers cross the desert, and salt flats appear like natural mirrors scattered across the high plateau.
-
The route is enjoyed at a relaxed pace, with carefully planned stops and continuous guidance. The gradual ascent allows your body to adapt comfortably to the altitude while you take in the changing scenery.
-
One of the first highlights is the Licancabur Volcano viewpoint, where this majestic volcanic peak dominates the horizon. Here, we enjoy an outdoor breakfast surrounded by an unforgettable setting of open plains, towering volcanoes, and endless sky—a perfect introduction to the spirit of the Altiplano.
-
We then continue along the international route toward Argentina, crossing Jama Pass and traveling near Hito Cajón, close to the Bolivian border. Along the way, you may spot the distant antennas of the ALMA Observatory, located on the Chajnantor Plateau, one of the world’s most important astronomical sites.
-
Our journey continues to the Quepiaco Wetland, a remarkable high-altitude ecosystem fed by meltwater and underground springs. In the middle of one of the driest deserts on Earth, this lagoon provides refuge for a surprising variety of wildlife. Depending on the season and conditions, Andean birds may be seen feeding along its shores, creating a beautiful contrast with the surrounding arid landscape.
-
Further into the Altiplano, the impressive Monjes de la Pacana emerge from the plain. These monumental rock formations resemble natural sculptures carved by time, wind, and volcanic forces. Nearby, we encounter the iconic Pacana “Indian”, one of the most memorable formations along the route.
-
As the journey continues, smaller salt flats, wetlands, and wide-open plains reveal the immense scale and isolation of this region. Despite its apparent barrenness, the Altiplano is full of life. Vicuñas, Andean birds, and occasionally flamingos can be spotted moving through this extreme but remarkably vibrant environment.
-
Upon entering the Salar de Tara Reserve, the landscape transforms once again. Colorful lagoons, mineral-rich formations, volcanic rocks, and pale salt-covered terrain create an otherworldly panorama. We explore the area on foot at a gentle pace, taking time to appreciate its delicate ecosystems and the natural processes that have shaped them over thousands of years.
-
The final destination is the spectacular Salar de Quisquiro, where the scenery becomes almost planetary. Its unusual colors, textures, and vast open spaces evoke landscapes beyond Earth, and some studies have drawn comparisons between this environment and conditions that may have existed on Mars in the distant past.
-
Eventually, we begin our return to San Pedro de Atacama. As the altitude decreases, the air becomes denser and the desert gradually changes once more. Signs of life reappear, and the distant oasis slowly comes into view.
-
What remains is the powerful sensation of having crossed one of the most remote, silent, and extraordinary regions of the Atacama.
-
Ruta de los Salares is not simply a collection of viewpoints—it is a journey through the desert itself, experienced with time, depth, and awareness.
-
Due to the distance and high altitude of this excursion, we recommend scheduling it toward the end of your itinerary, after allowing enough time for proper acclimatization and a more comfortable experience.
