"FULL DAY TO PALI AIKE NATIONAL PARK" Tour

PALI AIKE NATIONAL PARK – CHILE: Located in the remote southern plains of Chilean Patagonia, Pali Aike National Park is one of the most unique and mysterious protected areas in the country. Situated in the Magallanes Region near the border with Argentina, this extraordinary volcanic landscape offers visitors the opportunity to explore a wild and ancient territory shaped by lava fields, extinct volcanoes, dramatic craters, and vast Patagonian steppes unlike anywhere else in South America. The name “Pali Aike” comes from the language of the indigenous Tehuelche people and is commonly translated as “desolate place” or “land of evil spirits,” a reflection of the park’s rugged appearance and the strong winds that sweep across the open plains. Despite its remote and seemingly barren environment, the park possesses a fascinating beauty and geological importance that make it a hidden gem of Patagonia.

Pali Aike National Park is internationally recognized for its volcanic formations, including lava tubes, basaltic fields, and enormous craters formed thousands of years ago by intense volcanic activity. Among its most iconic attractions is the impressive Morada del Diablo crater, where visitors can descend into an extinct volcanic crater and walk through landscapes that resemble another planet. The park’s unique geology creates a striking contrast between dark volcanic rock, golden grasslands, and the endless Patagonian sky. In addition to its geological significance, the park also holds important archaeological and anthropological value. Evidence of early human presence has been discovered in caves within the area, making Pali Aike an important site for understanding the prehistoric cultures that once inhabited southern Patagonia.

Although the environment may appear harsh at first glance, the park supports a remarkable variety of wildlife adapted to extreme Patagonian conditions. Visitors may encounter guanacos roaming the plains, foxes, armadillos, rheas, flamingos, and numerous species of birds of prey. The region’s open landscapes also provide exceptional opportunities for photography, birdwatching, hiking, and nature observation. One of the greatest attractions of Pali Aike National Park is its sense of isolation and authenticity. Unlike more crowded tourist destinations, this remote protected area allows travelers to experience the silence, immensity, and raw wilderness of Patagonia in a truly intimate way. The powerful winds, volcanic scenery, and endless horizons create an atmosphere of exploration and adventure that feels untouched by modern civilization.

Accessible from Punta Arenas through scenic Patagonian routes, Pali Aike National Park represents a completely different side of Chilean Patagonia—one defined not by mountains and glaciers, but by ancient volcanic forces, vast steppes, and the untamed spirit of the far south. It is an ideal destination for adventurous travelers seeking unusual landscapes, geological wonders, and a deeper connection with Patagonia’s wild and lesser-known territories.

Itinerary

This journey takes you deep into one of the most unique volcanic landscapes in southern Patagonia, where vast basaltic lava fields, ancient volcanic cones, and sparse semi-desert vegetation create a scenery that feels almost extraterrestrial. Within this remote environment lies one of the park’s most significant historical treasures: the Pali Aike Cave, a site where human remains dating back more than 10,000 years have been discovered, offering a rare glimpse into the earliest inhabitants of the region.

  • Your experience begins with pick-up from your accommodation in Punta Arenas (urban area) starting at approximately 8:00 AM. As we leave the city behind, the route opens into the immense Patagonian steppe, a vast and silent landscape shaped by wind, where native flora and fauna thrive in one of the most extreme environments in South America.
  • The first stop will be at the historic San Gregorio Estancia, a place that preserves the essence of Patagonia’s pioneering past. Here, we will also observe the remains of the steamship Amadeo and the historic clipper Ambassador, relics that reflect the maritime and industrial heritage of the region.
  • We then continue toward Pali Aike National Park, entering a truly extraordinary volcanic territory. The scenery changes dramatically as black lava formations, extinct volcanic cones, and open steppe landscapes unfold in every direction, creating a powerful contrast of colors and textures.
  • Inside the park, we will visit the renowned Pali Aike Cave, an archaeological site of great importance where evidence of human occupation dating back over 10,000 years has been found. This location provides a unique connection to Patagonia’s earliest history.
  • During the approximately 8 km hike, we will explore some of the park’s most striking formations, including the Devil’s Wells, Devil’s Home, Laguna Ana, and the crater of an extinct volcano known locally as the Devil’s Home area. Along the way, you will also have the chance to observe native wildlife such as guanacos, foxes, rheas, and various bird species, all adapted to this rugged volcanic environment.
  • After a full day of exploration, we will begin our return to Punta Arenas, arriving at approximately 19:00 hrs, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation.

In exceptional circumstances, adverse weather conditions may prevent the return to Punta Arenas on the originally scheduled date. Notes:

  • Level of difficulty: LOW – MODERATE DIFFICULTY
  • TERRAIN CHARACTERISTICS: Well-marked trails in general. The terrain is irregular and volcanic, composed of basalt rock, gravel, and compact sand. Sections are exposed to strong Patagonian winds (an important factor). There are few technical slopes, but the surface is uneven throughout.
  • PHYSICAL DEMAND: Typical hikes cover approximately 5 to 8 km, with 2 to 4 hours of effective walking. The pace is generally easy to moderate.
  • FACTORS THAT INCREASE DIFFICULTY: Constant strong winds (very typical in the Magallanes region), lack of shade and shelter, highly changeable weather conditions (cold, rain, and occasional snow), and volcanic terrain that can be slippery or unstable in certain areas.
  • Minimum age required for the tour: 3 years old.
  • Children rate applies from 8 to 12 years old. Adult rate applies from 13 years old and above.
  • Excursion days and schedules may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and the groups forming.
  • We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for outdoor trekking activities and windy weather, a hat or cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, a photographic camera, and binoculars.
  • We recommend bringing bottles of mineral water and energy snacks.
  • This excursion is highly dependent on weather conditions. The itinerary may vary as follows: outbound via Punta Delgada with return from Porvenir to Punta Arenas, or both outbound and return crossings via Punta Delgada. Please consult us regarding the itinerary available on your selected date.
  • We recommend not booking this excursion if your departure flight from Punta Arenas is scheduled for the same day, as weather conditions may cause itinerary changes and modifications to the tour’s return time.
