Overview

“VISIT TO EL YESO RESERVOIR” Tour

EL YESO RESERVOIR IN CHILE. El Yeso Reservoir is one of the most impressive natural attractions in central Chile, renowned for its striking turquoise waters and dramatic Andean scenery. Located in the Cajón del Maipo region, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Santiago, this reservoir lies high in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of over 2,500 meters above sea level, offering visitors a breathtaking escape into pristine mountain landscapes. Built as a strategic water reserve for the Santiago metropolitan area, El Yeso Reservoir is surrounded by towering peaks, rugged cliffs, and wide valleys shaped by glacial activity. Its intense blue and emerald tones, which change with the light and weather conditions, create a spectacular contrast against the surrounding rocky terrain and snow-capped summits, making it a favorite destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

The journey to El Yeso Reservoir is an experience in itself. Travelers follow a scenic mountain road that winds through the Cajón del Maipo, passing rivers, waterfalls, and dramatic geological formations. Along the route, visitors can appreciate the raw beauty of the Andes and observe native wildlife such as birds of prey, foxes, and grazing animals adapted to the high-altitude environment. While swimming is not permitted due to the reservoir’s role as a water supply, the area offers excellent opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, and peaceful contemplation. The silence of the mountains, combined with the vast open landscapes, provides a sense of tranquility and connection with nature that is increasingly rare.

El Yeso Reservoir is a year-round destination, each season offering a different perspective of its beauty. In summer, the clear skies and vibrant colors dominate the scenery, while in winter, snowfall transforms the surroundings into a dramatic alpine landscape. Whether visited as part of a guided excursion or a private journey, El Yeso Reservoir stands as one of Chile’s most remarkable high-mountain destinations and a must-see highlight of the Cajón del Maipo region.

Itinerary

  • We set off early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, departing from Santiago toward the impressive Andes Mountains, where the access route to El Yeso Reservoir is located approximately 73 kilometers from the city. As we travel deeper into the mountains, we pass through small Andean villages and the town of San José de Maipo, the cultural heart of the region.
  • During the ascent, the landscape gradually transforms, with towering rocky peaks, winding mountain roads, and the presence of native sclerophyll forests that display a rich palette of colors changing with the seasons. The journey itself becomes an immersive experience, surrounded by dramatic scenery at every turn.
  • By mid-morning, around 10:30 AM, we arrive at a scenic viewpoint prepared for a short break, where we enjoy a light snack accompanied by juice and coffee or tea while admiring the reservoir’s striking turquoise waters. This is an ideal moment to take photographs of the lagoon and the vibrant, multicolored mountain backdrop.
  • Our route then continues deeper into the Cajón del Maipo, offering extraordinary views of the imposing San José Volcano and the glaciers that descend from its slopes. The natural grandeur of the Andes is on full display throughout this portion of the journey.
  • To complement the experience, we savor a carefully arranged Spanish-style platter featuring a selection of cheeses and Serrano ham, paired with fine Chilean wines.
