We are Beyond Roots, a group of friends that have joined efforts in order to provide an Immersion in Afro Cuban Culture. Growing up in Guanabacoa, one of the strongest exponents of this culture, we were raised under the living legacy of our African ancestors. Now we have an authentic passion for educating people about this misunderstood topic. We want to share with you the feeling of our community, transmit you a knowledge that has been passed from generations and show you its influence in the daily life of the Cubans from different perspectives. In this particular experience you will have an immersion in every aspect of it.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

We’ll start with a warm welcome at “Centro de las Raíces” in Old Havana over a delicious coffee. This is the first cultural center in Cuba fully dedicated to enhance afro aesthetics and identity in the island and Beyond Roots headquarters. From there, we’ll ride together to Guanabacoa, the cradle of Afro-Cuban culture.

In Guanabacoa, you’ll discover the profound influence Afro-Cuban religions have had on our cuisine and culture while enjoying a traditional beverage. This isn’t just a cooking lesson; it’s a journey into the soul of our community.

Surama, the queen of the kitchen, will guide you through the local cooking traditions, sharing when, why, and how we prepare each dish. This is about embracing the folklore of a modest community, not professional cooking.

Finally, we’ll savor the dishes we’ve prepared together, sharing stories and laughter under the rhythm of drums and dance. You’ll realize that eating is a mystical act that brings strangers together like family.
