Come with us to discover the charming port city of Gibara, full of myths and legends, which in the 18th century became the second walled city of the island and the main access by sea to the northern part of eastern Cuba.
Gibara, internationally known as the "Villa Blanca" is located about 33 kilometers north of the city of Holguin, in eastern Cuba. It was founded as a city on January 16, 1817 when the first stone was laid for the construction of the military fort of San Fernando on the Punta de Yarey, adjacent to the Bay of Gibara and known today as Bateria de Fernando VII. Gibara owes it's name, according to some historians, to the aboriginal word Jibá. The city of Gibara has an extraordinary history and a broad culture of its own, according to the lineage of it's foundation, an impressive, varied and exuberant landscape, beautiful architectural sites and a perfect layout of it's houses, streets and parks.
Among Cuban historians, there is a relevant controversy about whether it was the Bay of Gibara or the Bay of Bariay (very close to each other) that gave shelter to the ships of Admiral Christopher Columbus on his first voyage of discovery to Cuba. It is historically proven that on October 27, 1492, Admiral Christopher Columbus sighted Cuban land, according to scholars, in a wide bay guarded by a mountain known today as "Silla de Gibara".
