SILLUSTANI ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX TOUR
Itinerary
Without a doubt, one of the best known tourist attractions in the world that identifies Puno is the archaeological complex of Sillustani. We will pick up the travelers in their hotel at 02:00 pm. to leave for the archaeological complex of Sillustani in a tourist bus (combi). The trip from Puno to Sillustani takes approximately 45 minutes.
Sillustani is located on the shores of the Umayo lagoon. Sillustani, comes from two words whose union gives the meaning of "Slide of nails" possibly in allusion to the impenetrable blocks of the building. About the structures of Sillustani, this one is important for being a necropolis or cemetery that lodges at least 90 tombs in an extension of 150 hectares whose entrance is possible through a stairway of 78 steps.it is famous for their chullpas, that are circular towers of stone, raised to lodge the funeral remains of the main authorities of the old residents of the Collao.
In the cemetery, which follows the tradition of Collas and Lupacas of settling on a plateau, you can observe structures of monumental character, in the presence of the so-called chullpas that reach 12 meters in height. With respect to these, it is necessary to mention that many of them were found to be half-built, which could indicate that (until before the arrival of the Spaniards) these were ordered to be made by the characters of power to be their mortuary dwellings. The constructions of the chullpas, were made with carved stone, some made in a rustic way and others finely and present circular, square and rectangular forms.
Internally, in the chullpas you can see the presence of a chamber in which a false vault is manifested, as well as lateral stone locks. Externally, different cornices can be seen, as well as reliefs, the latter standing out for the use of collas motifs mixed with Inca and for the representation of animal motifs. Regarding the decoration of the latter, it can be said that possibly they would have been painted white. These chullpas have only one entrance way, which was oriented towards the sunrise.
After visiting the chullpas of Sillustani we return to the city of Puno, arriving at approximately 05:00 pm. We finish with the transfer of the tourists to their respective hotels.
