This is a unique opportunity to see the majestic Andes en route with Aconcagua in the background, the highest peak in America while enjoying one of the most famous ski resorts in Latin America:
PORTILLO is the oldest ski center in South America and, until today, the only one in the region that has hosted a world ski championship. Since 1949, this ski resort has received more than 3 million passengers. Its origin dates back to the construction of the Trasandino Railroad by English engineers in 1887. The practice of skiing began as a way of entertainment for the English who worked on the site. In 1909 the first ski club was founded - the German Excursion Club, in Valparaíso - which began to visit the Laguna del Inca area, called Portillo. In 1910, after the inauguration of the Trasandino Railroad, athletes began to arrive who used the same train as a cable car between Caracoles and Juncal. As early as the 1930s, the first towing lifeline was installed. Europeans and Americans began to arrive and popularize the sport among Chileans. Later, the construction of a cabin for lodging would give rise to the origin of the current Hotel Portillo. In the 1940s, a company was founded for the construction of a large hotel; however, the venture failed.
