In the middle of the metropolitan region that is one of the areas with the most wine-growing tradition in the country, on one side of the Maipo River. It was in this sector where the first vineyards were founded, favored by the climatic conditions and excellent soils between the Andes Mountains and the coastal mountains.
Currently, it has about 10,000 hectares planted. Taking advantage of the Mediterranean climate, with frosts at specific times, the finest wines in the country are produced, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon strain that stands out with its intense color, delicate aromas and fruit tones.
The vineyards are located through the Maipo valley, following the course of the river of the same name, from the foothills of the Andes mountain range, at a height of 800 m / s / n / m, to Isla de Maipo and Talagante at southwest of Santiago. This zone is inserted in the head of the Central Valley. Its natural limits are, to the east, the Andes mountain range and, to the west, the Costa mountain range; it has a natural decline from east to west, reaching 1,000 m / s / n / m in the first and descending towards the west with an average of 500 to 600 m / s / n / m. Due to its topography, the cultivation of the vine varies within the heights just mentioned, generally extending to gentle slopes.
The most relevant and closest rivers are the Maipo and the Mapocho, both with torrential flow in the months of rains and thaws that come from the Andes Mountains.
